THE FACULTY OF LAW, UNIVERSITY OF TURKU INVITES applications for the position of University Lecturer in Law (permanent position, starting from 1 August 2023)

Job description

In accordance with the University research career model, the position of University Lecturer is a third stage career position with emphasis on teaching. The position of University Lecturer contains a wide range of teaching duties, which include teaching both basic and postgraduate level studies, planning the studies and supervising theses. The position includes the development and coordination tasks regarding teaching in English at the Faculty, in addition to which the University Lecturer participates in the development of teaching and forms of studies together with the University Teacher. The appointee is expected to provide teaching at least in two branches of law. Applicants are requested to describe in the written statement (vision paper), in which branches of law and what kind of teaching they could offer. When filling the position, special attention is paid to applicant´s research area and how it is linked to the Faculty´s focal areas of research. Applicants are requested to describe in the written statement, in what ways his or her academic research is linked with the research conducted in the Faculty.

The position is not bound to subjects or subject groups. This application round covers all branches of law.

Qualifications

The qualification requirements of the position are described in the rules of procedure of the University of Turku. An appropriate doctoral degree, and the ability to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses are required of persons selected for the post of university lecturer. When assessing the merits of the applicants for the post of university lecturer, scholarly work, practical expertise in the field in question, if needed, teaching experience and teacher training, ability to produce study materials, other teaching merits, and a teaching demonstration will be taken into account. In addition, the educational needs of the Faculty will be taken into account in the selection.

The University Lecturer is also expected to conduct independent scientific research and to participate in seeking research funding and realizing research projects. In addition, the University Lecturer has administrative duties at the University.  Fluent English language skills, capability of teaching in English and evidence of international co-operation are regarded as advantages.

Foreigners and Finnish citizens who are not native Finnish speakers, can be appointed to teaching and research positions without demonstrating the decreed mastery of the Finnish language. However, the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position requires good skills in Finnish language. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish she/he is required to acquire an adequate level of proficiency in Finnish within three years. The university will support the appointee in acquiring the necessary Finnish language skills.

Salary

The salary is in accordance with the University salary system for teaching and research personnel, levels 5-7, where the position-specific salary component is 3 044,00–4 092,29 euro per month.  In addition, a personal work performance component will be paid. The personal work performance component is 6– 50% of the task specific salary component.

Trial period

The post is subject to a six (6) month trial period.
