The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is currently seeking to recruit a

SENIOR LECTURER, HISTORY, from September 1st 2021 for a fixed term of five years (as a substitute for a permanent member of staff).

The Senior Lecturer’s position is allocated to the Department of History and Ethnology and its subject area of History.

The Senior Lecturer’s duties focus on teaching general history to undergraduate and post-graduate students, with a particular emphasis on teaching and research in comparative and transnational modern European history.

Qualifications we are looking for

In evaluating the applicants, both teaching and research merits will be considered. In addition, special attention will be paid to the following: versatile methodological expertise and knowledge of the political, cultural or intellectual history (history of ideas) of different countries; experience in teaching and research supervision; and merits in the development of teaching. The successful applicant will contribute to the department's existing areas of strength and/or extend them in new directions, with a particular emphasis on the comparative study of political cultures, the study of the short- and long-term consequences of wars and conflicts, and/or gender history. International activities and networks are regarded as an asset. 

The duties and qualification requirements for the position of the Senior Lecturer are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The person selected for this position is expected to teach in Finnish and/or English. Good English skills are thus required, and the ability to teach in English is regarded as an asset.

The annual salary range will be approximately 38.800 – 64.200 EUR (gross income, including a holiday bonus), depending on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

A trial period of six months trial applies to this position.

  2. A CV compiled in keeping with good scientific practice and considering, where possible, the template for a researcher´s curriculum vitae of the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity (TENK);
  3. A short (2-3 pages) explanation of the applicant’s research activities, merits in scientific work and the supervision of research, including the acquisition of supplemental funding and responsibilities in externally funded research projects;
  4. A short (2-3 pages) explanation of the applicant’s pedagogical training and teaching merits, i.e. a teaching portfolio;
  5. A short (1-2 pages) explanation of the applicant’s international activities and experience in societal interaction;
  6. A list of all the scientific and other publications with which the applicant wishes to demonstrate her/his competence and merits, composed in accordance with the guidelines of the Academy of Finland;
  7. A maximum of 5 publications, which must be numbered in accordance with the list of publications.
