SoC (System-on-Chip) Hub is a joint effort to design new SoCs for 5G, AI, imaging and security applications. It collects and boosts national competence from application requirements to prototype chips and completes the overall expertise in embedded systems and microelectronics in Finland. SoC Hub is based on tight cooperation between Tampere University, large enterprises, small and medium-sized companies, and other research organizations. It collects key players (students, researchers and companies) and will establish the first ecosystem for SoC design in Finland.

Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic System-on-Chip (SoC) researcher to join our growing team at Tampere University. You would be working in a team handling all aspects of System-on-Chip design: specification, automation tools, RTL design, verification, SW architecture and tools, physical design and sample testing of chips fabricated in leading foundries. This includes handling of system topics like memory architectures, system throughput, use case base verification as well as dedicated module developments such as ML/AI, security, interconnect, RISC-V architectures as examples. You will lead other researchers and ideally aid students to reach the next level in SoC design. You will be working closely with local industry to provide productizable solutions, and can also spot specific areas to explore for world-leading research.

Requirements

You should have a PhD degree in computer engineering, information technology, computer science, electrical engineering or other relevant research area.

Suitable background and skills include some of the following:

  • System-on-Chip architectures
  • Computer architectures
  • Memory architectures
  • Physical design of chips (RTL to GDSII flow, also DFT)
  • RTL design
  • Verification (advanced methodologies like UVM)
  • IP-XACT based design automation
  • Network-on-chip and interconnect architectures
  • System and chipset level topics, knowledge on product architectures
  • Genuine interest on silicon industry and where it is heading to

We offer

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of 2 years with an option to extend the duration up to five years in total. The planned starting date is 15 May 2021 or as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The position of a Postdoctoral Research Fellow is placed on the job demands level 5 (teaching and research staff). A typical starting salary of Postdoctoral Researcher is around 3500 EUR/month.

You would be joining a research group that already has significant amount of people working in chips, with established design environment, EDA tools, and silicon technologies available. The job belongs to a project with secured funding on test chip development with several industrial partners.

Tehtävänkuvaus

Tutkijatohtori osallistuu työssään kaikkiin järjestelmäpiirisuunnittelun osa-alueisiin. Hän johtaa muiden tutkijoiden työtä ja mahdollisuuksien mukaan avustaa myös opiskelijoita nousemaan seuraavalle tasolle järjestelmäpiirisuunnittelussa. Lisäksi tehtävään valittava henkilö työskentelee tiiviisti yhteistyössä paikallisten teollisuuden edustajien kanssa ja osaa löytää korkeatasoista tutkimusta vaativia osa-alueita.
