We are now looking for an Environmental Compliance Counsel to join our global compliance team. The job location is at the UPM office in Helsinki, Finland (or at another UPM office with frequent presence in Helsinki).

UPM Legal Function is a global function with 30+ professionals guiding our businesses through uncertainty, working with UPM’s business areas and global functions in a variety of legal matters, including areas of contracts, corporate transactions and financing, as well as corporate governance and compliance.

What you’ll do

The main responsibility of the Environmental Compliance Counsel will be to develop, implement and manage UPM’s global environmental compliance program. Such program aim to help the organization to prevent, detect and respond to environmental compliance risks and to control and monitor such risks. More specifically, the responsibilities will include regulatory monitoring, compliance risk management, compliance trainings and communication, management of policies and procedures, and compliance investigations. The Environmental Compliance Counsel will also help the businesses and functions in resolving various environmental compliance related matters and questions.

It is vital to ensure that the organization’s current or proposed activities, policies and business practices comply with all applicable laws and regulation. Thus, the Environmental Compliance Counsel is expected to drive results and offer proactive operational and strategic support to UPM’s business areas and functions within the field of environmental law and other ESG and sustainability related regulations. This also includes instructing and managing external advisors within your responsibility area according to UPM Legal’s supplier management principles. Furthermore, the tasks include active participation in developing and impacting the respective area of laws on relevant local and regional level.

UPM Legal has a desire to build imbedded legal processes throughout its operations and integrate such processes and policies into business and functions operations seamlessly and in a business-oriented manner. Thus, we are looking for a Environmental Compliance Counsel who operates smoothly in cooperation with the business leaders and other stakeholders in a solution-oriented manner. A good cooperation requires combination of legal expertise with project management and ability to cooperate horizontally. The Environmental Compliance Counsel reports to the Chief Compliance Officer and works closely with UPM’s Responsibility team and environmental professionals.

Who you are

You have a master’s degree in law and minimum of 7 years of legal work experience in the relevant field(s) of law, ideally as an in-house counsel in corporation, at a law firm or regulator dealing with international matters. You have in-depth knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements pertaining to environmental matters and other applicable ESG and sustainability regulations. Prior experience in developing and implementing global compliance programs is considered an asset. You are business-minded, possess good interpersonal skills, are flexible and able to work both independently and as a team member on a range of assignments in a cross-cultural environment. You are solution-oriented and highly motivated and enjoy working in a constantly changing and developing business. You have excellent communication skills and are fluent in written and spoken English.
