Finnish Museum of Natural History invites applications for the position of

Curator in entomology (fixed term)

The position will start as soon as possible after 1.9.2021 and it is fixed until 31.8.2026.

The Curator will specialize in the systematics and/or biogeography of insects, and we especially encourage applicants working on Coleoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, or Hymenoptera to apply.

The Curator will be part of the Entomology Team in the Zoology Unit. The duties of the Curator will include independent research in collection- and specimen-based systematics and/or biogeography, as well as managing, amassing and developing the scientific collections together with the other team members. The Curator will participate in the museum’s tasks related to teaching (annually 5% of total working time) and societal interaction. Specifically, the Curator is expected to teach insect courses, produce teaching material and develop teaching in collaboration with the Faculties of the University. The Curator is expected to be active in obtaining external funding, forming and leading his/her own research group, and supervising students and junior colleagues.

The Curator must hold a doctoral degree and have a record of scientific publications in the field. Experience in working with scientific collections, participation and training in university teaching and supervision, proven success in obtaining external funding, experience in societal interaction, as well as an inclination to gather knowledge on Finland’s nature and fauna are considered assets. Teamwork, interaction and supervision skills are considered essential. We welcome applicants with distinct profile, complementing the existing expertise of the Entomology Team.

The official languages of the University of Helsinki are Finnish and Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from formal language requirements. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the applicant must have good skills in English, but it is desirable if the appointee is able to communicate well also in Finnish.

The salary will be based on levels 6-7 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. Finnish Museum of Natural History LUOMUS (www.luomus.fi/en) is an independent institute in the University of Helsinki. The museum’s duties are to amass, maintain and display its collections, and to conduct related research, particularly in biodiversity, systematics and evolution. The collections serve research, teaching and public education in biology, geology, and biodiversity, and form part of the international network of natural history repositories. The museum has four units: Zoology, Botany, Natural Sciences, and Biodiversity Informatics. The institution has a staff of c. 130, of which 40 work in the Zoology Unit. The entomological collections of the Unit comprise over 9 million specimens from all over the world. The collections are particularly rich in Coleoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera.
