Professor in Neurology

 

Nomination and Location of the Position

The post concerned is a Professor in Neurology and it belongs to the Research Unit of Neurosciences at the Faculty of Medicine, UO. After giving consent the professor may hold a secondary office as chief physician at the Oulu University Hospital.

Responsibilities, Required Qualifications and Language Skills:

The professor will be a dynamic individual, who provides vision and leadership in the field of neurology. The professor is responsible for undergraduate and postgraduate training, and for implementation of entrustable professional activities into neurology specialist training.

Qualifications for successful candidate include a doctoral degree, high-quality scientific competence, experience in supervising scientific research, ability to give high-quality education based on research and supervision of doctoral theses, as well as evidence of international collaboration in his/her field of research and training (see section 33, Universities’ Act). Practical familiarity in the field of neurology is required.

When assessing the applicant’s merits, issues taken into consideration include scientific publications and other research achievements, teaching experience, pedagogical training and other teaching merits. In addition, the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, practical familiarity within the field concerned, and success in acquiring domestic and international research funding, scientific work abroad and other international activities will be taken into consideration. In addition, the applicant’s merits in research in the focus areas of the University, Faculty or Research Unit will be taken into consideration.

The teaching language in UO is Finnish and the secondary office post (clinical duty) requires fluent Finnish.

Research of the Faculty of Medicine is mainly focused on “Molecular and environmental basis for lifelong health” in which we generate greater understanding of the factors that affect health during life and how this knowledge can be translated into the benefit of lifelong health. In addition, we promote learning into the possibilities of combining ICT with health and service research to create new innovations in connected health. The research in the field of neurology has a sustained focus on rare neurological diseases. University Hospital of Oulu is an affiliated partner in the European Reference Network for Rare Neurological Diseases.

We offer an interesting and versatile research topic in an international environment and the possibility to develop professionally with the help of experienced colleagues. Furthermore, we offer the development opportunities of a large organization.

The salary will be approximately 6000-7200 EUR per month. It is based on levels 8-9 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities and on personal work performance (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component).

  6. Brief research vision and action plan including the applicant’s vision how to carry out research in the field of neurology/neurosciences (max 3 pages)

A six-month trial period is applied to the position.

Reviewer Assessment

The selection process follows the University of Oulu recruitment guidelines. The process is carried out by a recruitment committee and the candidates are subjected to publication analyses based on their publication lists. The candidates that are considered most suitable by the recruitment committee will also undergo an expert evaluation, assessing the following merits:

-       Scientific activities and their reflection in the publication record, scientific presentations, and other recognitions, e.g. awards and patents

-       Teaching activities and their evaluation (teaching portfolio; including student’s evaluation)

-       Supervision of diploma and doctoral students

-       Acquisition of competitive research funds

-       International scientific activities and contacts

-       Services for the academic community

-       Academic and societal relevance and potential of activities

Interview and proposal by the recruitment committee

The recruitment committee analyses the reviewers´ evaluations, interviews the suitable candidates and makes a proposal for the appointment.

Official Employment

Based on the proposal by the recruiting committee the Dean will make her proposition to the Vice Rector for Research, who will make the nomination to the post.
