The Department of Physics is currently seeking to recruit candidates to the position of 

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER, PHYSICS

The position starts earliest on November 1, 2021 or as agreed, for a fixed-term of 2 years.

The Hybrid Quantum Technologies group at University of Jyväskylä (Finland) seeks a talented postdoctoral researcher in the field of optomechanics and/or low temperature physics to join the group. AMO or other quantum information background can also be suitable.

The project

The postdoctoral researcher will work in a project where the goal is to achieve quantum level control of silicon optomechanical systems at millikelvin temperatures with feedback methods. This will then be used in a larger system combining the optomechanical structure with qubits. The motivation is both in probing the quantum control and coherence limits of mesoscopic mechanical systems and in advancing silicon quantum technologies. The project will give an excellent background for an academic or industrial career related to quantum technologies. 

The group

We study the quantum potential of silicon technologies, concentrating especially on optical interfaces for silicon spin qubits and optomechanical systems. The motivation comes from both in enabling practical quantum sensors and quantum computing components and in studying fundamental physics in these on-chip quantum physics testbeds. Fundamental questions that we aim to investigate include the ultimate quantum coherence limits and possibilities for superposition states in macroscopic systems. Our experimental toolset includes optical and electrical (both DC and microwave) measurements at low temperatures (3 K and mK) as well as advanced nanofabrication.  

The group was formed in the fall of 2018 and we are a smallish group that is still growing. You would be working closely together with the whole group but especially with a PhD student assigned on the same project. Our webpage: www.jyu.fi/quantum-technologies.

You

In the project, you will need to combine advanced optical and microwave methods at low temperatures, strong theoretical understanding of the physics involved, and skills in numerical modelling (Python or Matlab preferred). Preferably, you would already master some of these, but rest can be learned during the project. You will guide PhD and MSc students and can drive the project forward.

You need to have a doctoral degree (or be close to getting one) in physics or related engineering sciences and must have research experience in an international environment. We seek an excellent candidate with relevant experience, preferably in quantum optics, nanophotonics, low temperature physics or other AMO physics.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of a Postdoctoral Researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. A good command of English is required and a proficiency to teach in English will be considered beneficial. The PhD degree required for the position must have been completed before starting the position.

The annual salary range will be approximately 41,000 - 47,000 EUR (gross income, including holiday bonus), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.

The main areas of research at the Department of Physics are nuclear and accelerator-based physics, particle physics, and materials physics. In nuclear and accelerator-based physics the research areas are nuclear structure, especially the physics of exotic nuclei, nuclear models, double beta decay, ion source physics, and applied accelerator-based research. In particle physics the research areas are ultrarelativistic heavy ion collision physics, neutrino physics, and particle cosmology. In materials physics the research areas are nanophysics and quantum technologies, non-equilibrium physics, superconductivity, low temperature physics, computational materials physics and physics of complex materials. Experimental research at the Department is conducted in the Accelerator Laboratory, the multidisciplinary Nanoscience Center (NSC), Tomography Laboratory and in foreign research centers such as CERN and GSI.
