Lammi Biological Station is one of three field stations belonging to the University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, with its sister stations in Kilpisjärvi and Tvärminne. The station is open for research, education and seminars year-round and serves the entire University.

The University of Helsinki’s Lammi Biological Station is currently seeking a

RESEARCH TECHNICIAN

for a three-year, fixed term position with the possibility of further extension. The research technician’s duties involve the support of research, teaching and environmental monitoring activities. You will be a part of a diverse and inspirational team and you will be essential in the support of cutting-edge research at the station. In your duties you will have opportunities for fieldwork locally, but overnight travel for work will be rare.

Duties are varied and involve many different research projects. Depending on the project, duties could involve the support of fish, plant, bird and butterfly research, processing of laboratory samples, design, production and maintenance of research equipment. Fieldwork may require flexibility in working hours at different times of the year.

Other duties involve sampling as part of environmental monitoring projects, the maintenance of equipment and assisting in the organization of field courses. Environmental monitoring projects require skills in e.g., water sampling and the maintenance of continuous sampling sensors. Proficiency in driving vans, tractors, snowmobiles, boats and their upkeep is central to the job.

A suitable applicant will be flexible by nature and have a readiness to adapt to change. Previous experience in research or sampling activities as well as with the operation of vehicles required for fieldwork is necessity.

Since the successful candidate will be involved in a wide variety of activities, s/he should have a readiness for fieldwork, eagerness to learn new skills and have an ability for conscientious, independent work. English and Finnish skills are beneficial as well as skills in information technology, electrical engineering or mechanical maintenance are also advantageous to the applicant. A university or applied university degree in fields related to biology or environmental sciences provide many of the suitable skills for the job. The position will begin on 18.10.2021 or as agreed. A six-month trial period will be applied.

The salary will be based on the University salary system at the demand level of 7, with a gross monthly salary of ca. 2400-3000 depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
