Ceramic materials research group at the Faculty of engineering and naturals sciences is looking for a Doctoral Researcher. Our group concentrates on functional ceramics for use at energy and environmental applications. The main research interests include ceramics processing from powder synthesis to colloidal processing of suspensions to ceramic 3D printing. Special focus is on sustainable processing of functional structures to industrial needs. Our research themes cover aspects of both basic and applied research. 

Job description

We are looking for a Doctoral Researcher in the area of development of gas adsorption structures for energy efficient processes.

Successful candidates will pursue a doctoral degree at Tampere University. Full-time doctoral studies are expected to be completed in four years.

You will start working in Business Finland funded “Nanothrust” -project (for 2.5 years, option for continuation) with following tasks:

  • Fast adsorption/desorption materials for gases: zeolites, carbon, MOFs 
  • Adsorption structures by ceramic 3D printing or by coating
  • Functionality tests.

Requirements

You need to have a Master’s degree in materials science, chemistry, physics or a related field and have demonstrated the competence and motivation to pursue postgraduate studies. Please be prepared to provide proof of your merits when requested.

The research topic requires enthusiasm for solving engineering material challenge with natural science knowhow. 

Candidate is selected based on the level of promise that they show, and this will be evaluated on the basis of their study, their previous success in studies, and interest towards research topic.

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of maximum two and a half (2.5) years. The starting date is 1 March 2022 or as mutually agreed. A trial period of six (6) months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Doctoral Researcher is placed on level 2—4 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researchers is approximately 2450 EUR/month.

Keraamimateriaalien -tutkimusryhmä etsii väitöskirjatutkijaa materiaalitekniikan, kemian tai fysiikan alalta. Keraamimateriaalien tutkimusryhmä tekee alan perustutkimusta sekä kehittää uusia materiaaliratkaisuja energia- ja ympäristötekniikan sovelluksiin.

Tutkimus kattaa alueet jauhesynteesistä kolloidisen karakterisoinnin kautta 3D printtaukseen. Erityisenä painopisteenä on printtausteknologian ja ylikriittisen hiilidioksidin käyttö vihreänä teknologiana toiminnallisten keraamikappaleiden ja -pintojen valmistuksessa sekä kiertotalouden sovelluksissa.

Sovellukset vaihtelevat akkumateriaaleista ja -rakenteista, konstruktio- ja biokeraameihin, spesifisen adsorption rakenteisiin ja katalysaattoreihin. Keraamimateriaalien hyvää korkeanlämpötilankestoa, lujuusominaisuuksia sekä korroosion kestävyyttä kehitetään teollisuuden eri käyttötarkoituksiin.

Tutkimukselle on tyypillistä vankka perustutkimuksellinen osaaminen ja sen yhdistäminen lähellä teollisuutta tapahtuvaan soveltamistyöhön. Ryhmä on kansainvälisesti erittäin laajasti verkottunut.

Tehtävänkuvaus

Väitöskirjatutkijan tehtäviin kuuluu kaasujen nopean adsorption ja desorption materiaalien ja rakenteiden kehitys esim. zeoliittien, hiilen ja MOF materiaalien käyttö pinnoituksessa ja 3D rakenteiden tulostuksessa sekä rakenteiden toiminalliset kokeet.
