Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en

The Hybrid Solar Cells group at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences is engaged in research on third-generation photovoltaics with a special emphasis on halide perovskite solar cells. We have recently focused on lead-free perovskite-inspired materials for indoor photovoltaics, and we expect that these activities will expand considerably over the next few years with recently granted PERLA Project (Academy of Finland). We have access to state-of-the-art solar cell laboratories, with the possibility to cover from the synthesis of the materials, their characterization with a wide set of facilities available at Tampere University (e.g. UV-Vis, PL, XRD, SEM, XPS, and more), to the solar cell complete fabrication and characterization. We rely on a broad academic network of international collaborators in the field of photovoltaics and perovskites.

Job description

To strengthen our team, we are looking for a talented and highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to lead the research project “Perovskite-inspired materials for indoor photovoltaics”, which requires a strong background in the development of novel perovskite-inspired compositions specifically suitable for low-light intensity harvesting. The project involves synthesis, characterization of new materials and crystal structures, and device fabrication. The project is part of the PREIN (Photonics Research and Innovation) flagship program.

You will be integrated in a team of students and senior researchers with competences ranging from chemistry, physics, device engineering. You may also be involved in the supervision of M.Sc. and Ph.D. students and some teaching duties in the future.

Requirements

You are an enthusiastic, highly motivated researcher holding a PhD in Chemistry (e.g., Materials Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Solid-State Chemistry) or Materials Science and with experience in the field of metal halide semiconductors. We require strong hands-on experience in design and synthesis of novel perovskite and perovskite-inspired semiconductors and their characterization. In-depth experience in the characterization of material structures (XRD analysis, Rietveld refinement etc.), transient and dynamic tests (e.g., transient photovoltage/photocurrent, EIS), and/or in solar-cell fabrication and characterization is highly appreciated.

The work requires high level of experimental skills and analytical mindset for interpreting the measured data.

You are a team player able to work with multidisciplinary research teams. Your strengths include strong methodological background, excellent analytical skills, very good writing skills, high motivation for innovation, and flexibility to work and deliver results. The position is targeted for you if you have recently received a Ph.D. degree, preferably not more than 2 years ago, so that you may gain further experience and advance the career.

We offer

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of 2 years. The planned starting date is 1 December 2022 or as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The position of a Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands level 5-6 (teaching and research staff).

We offer a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus and several restaurants and cafés on campus with staff discounts. Please read more about working at Tampere University.

Photovoltaics and photonics are recognized as leading-edge research areas of Tampere University. We offer a world-class research environment in internationally recognized research groups. We have strong collaborative networks and offer great opportunities for researchers to develop their careers in an international setting.

How to apply

Please submit your application through our online recruitment system (link below). The closing date for applications is 17 September 2022 (at 23.59 EEST / 20.59 UTC). Please write your application and all accompanying documents in English and attach them in PDF format.

Applications should include the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae according to TENK guidelines
  • List of publications according to Academy of Finland guidelines
  • References from two people
  • Motivation letter (incl. research directions):
    • 1-3 pages where you introduce yourself and present your qualifications.
    • Previous research fields and main research results.
    • Future goals and research focus. Are there any specific projects and research issues you are primarily interested in?
