The Unit of Social Research is the largest unit in the Faculty of Social Sciences (SOC). Its key research themes are the transformation of social governance, social and societal processes and risks, and the challenges of well-being and sustainable development. The unit hosts six disciplines: social psychology, sociology, social policy, youth research, social anthropology and gender studies. The Social Research Unit also has four research centers: The Working Life Research Center (WRC), the Tampere Centre for Knowledge, Science, Technology and Innovation Studies (TaSTI), the Childhood, Youth and Family Research Center (PERLA) and the Peace Research Center (TAPRI).
Tampere Peace Research Institute (TAPRI) is a multidisciplinary and international research center whose mission is to conduct high quality research on the causes of war, on non-violent resolution of conflicts, and on conditions for peace. The overarching focus of TAPRI’s research is peaceful change. Research themes covered at TAPRI are diverse and open to new interventions, but four larger thematic priority areas are prioritized: Peace Mediation and Peacebuilding, Everyday Practices of Peace, Global Mobility and Feminist Peace Research. TAPRI research produces critical knowledge and is committed to peaceful change. It also bears long-term policy relevance. TAPRI’s research areas include conflict resolution and transformation including peacebuilding and mediation processes; post-conflict reconstruction and reconciliation including remembrance, post-conflict justice, ethics and recognition; human mobility; the gendered nature of peace and war; and the continuums of violence including structural, slow and epistemic violence.
TAPRI hosts international master’s degree programme in Peace, Mediation and Conflict Research. The degree programme is internationally recognized, with students from all over the world and with a variety of different academic backgrounds. TAPRI has also doctorate training in the field of peace and conflict research within the Faculty of Social Sciences.
Job description
The task of the Senior Research Fellow is to carry out research according to her/his research plan presented in the application, participate in the planning and directing of research and the application for funding to the research fields in TAPRI’s research programme. The post includes also teaching especially in the Master’s Programme in Peace, Mediation and Conflict Research coordinated by TAPRI.
Overall, active publishing and enthusiasm for teaching and supervision are expected. The Senior Research Fellow participates in various advanced activities of the research center and the unit, and she/he is encouraged to further develop and extend her/his own partner network. The more detailed job description is negotiated and agreed with the candidates during the recruitment process.
Requirements
The Senior Research Fellow must hold an appropriate doctoral degree and have a track record of scientific research as well as the instructional skills needed in the post. The post requires the ability to direct a research group and successfully apply for external research funding.
The following criteria are used in screening the applications:
- Suitability to the research domain of the position. Connections of the applicant’s earlier research with the research profile and themes of TAPRI are an advantage.
- Motivation and goals for the senior research fellow position
- Achievements in research and teaching. The applicant’s experience on the leadership of projects and of successful application for research funding will also be taken into account.
- The experience in leading projects and seeking external research funding
We offer
The position will be filled as an open-ended contract starting September 1, 2022. The salary of the Senior Research Fellow will be based on level 6-7 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition to the basic salary, supplementary salary will be paid according to the personal performance, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. These posts are subjected to a six-month probationary period.

Tehtävänkuvaus
Yliopistotutkijan tehtäviin kuuluvat oman tutkimuksen lisäksi osallistuminen tutkimushankkeiden suunnitteluun ja johtamiseen sekä rahoituksen hankintaan tutkimuskeskuksen tutkimusohjelmassa oleville tutkimusalueille. Tehtäviin sisältyy opetusta erityisesti TAPRI:n koordinoimassa Peace, Mediation and Conflict Research -maisteriohjelmassa sekä opinnäytetöiden ohjausta maisteri ja tohtorin opintojen tasolla.

Edellytämme
Yliopistotutkijan tehtävään valittavalta edellytetään soveltuvaa tohtorin tutkintoa ja vahvoja näyttöjä tieteellisestä tutkimustyöstä sekä tehtävässä tarvittavaa opetustaitoa. Yliopistotutkijan tehtävä edellyttää kykyä johtaa tutkimusryhmää ja hankkia täydentävää tutkimusrahoitusta. Arvostamme myös yhteistyökykyä ja valmiuksia tiimityöskentelyyn tutkimuskeskuksen kehittämiseksi.
