Interested in working around smart people with topics that will boost up your technological expertise and guarantee a bright future in industry? If yes, keep on reading!

We are seeking a new PhD student to our Power Electronics research group. The research group of Power Electronics in the unit of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences, Tampere University focuses on Power Electronics Converters design and their control for grid applications.

Job description

We are looking for smart and motivated person to work on multiport modular power electronics converter design for grid applications. The application of multiport converters in grid applications can be integrating multiple energy resources (such as combination of PV, fuel cell, wind and storage systems) into the AC grid and/or supplying AC/DC loads. The need for such converters will be increased in the future hybrid AC/DC distribution network. Another important application could be power electronics based solid state transformer (SST) to be replaced with traditional transformers. The challenges here are to improve the efficiency and tackle the reliability and life-time issues comparing the SSTs with traditional transformers. Applicants are invited to select either direction in their application.

Job includes theoretical study on state of art of such converters and their trends, optimized design and development of power electronics converters to reduce their volume, weight and number of components and/or improving their efficiency.

Development of the designed topologies and experimental tests with standalone setup and/or hardware in loop (HIL) or Power hardware in loop (PHIL) for system level studies will be carried out.

Requirements

We value your smartness, motivation, and skills to learn new things. In this regard, we greatly appreciate your success and grades in your previous studies. We also greatly value your sense of humor and positive attitude. Extra credits are given if your study record shows good amount of power electronics, and at least some courses in automation and control.

You need to have a master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science or a related field and have demonstrated (during your studies towards the master’s degree or otherwise) the competence and motivation to pursue postgraduate studies. Please be prepared to provide proof of your merits when requested.

Successful candidate must have previous experience with power electronics converter design and development (DC-DC, DC-AC and/or AC-AC converters). She/he should also have knowledge and previous experience on such converters’ control system design and implementation with both simulation software(s) and/or experimental setup.

Previous working experience with DSP microcontrollers and/or dSPACE control units and working experience with HIL and PHIL systems are beneficial to the position.

Successful candidates must be pursuing or will be accepted to study towards a doctoral degree in the doctoral programme of the discipline. Please visit the admissions webpage https://www.tuni.fi/en/study-with-us/programmes/doctoral-programmes for more information on eligibility requirements.

Candidates are selected based on the level of promise that they show, and this will be evaluated based on their previous success in studies, and merits in writing the doctoral thesis and / or scientific publishing.

Tampere University is a unique, multidisciplinary and boldly forward-looking, evolving community. Our values are openness, diversity, responsibility, courage, critical thinking, erudition, and learner-centredness. We hope that you can embrace these values and promote them in your work.

We offer

PhD position will be filled for a fixed-term period of 2 years with possibility to extend for another 2 years. The starting date of the position can be negotiated. A trial period applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. Tehoelektroniikan tutkimusryhmä hakee väitöskirjatutkijaa.

Tehoelektroniikan tutkimusryhmä Tampereen yliopiston informaatioteknologian ja viestinnän tiedekunnan sähkötekniikan yksikössä keskittyy tehoelektronisten sovellusten, kuten uusiutuvien energialähteiden, verkkoyhdistettyjen järjestelmien ja energiavarastojen dynaamiseen mallinnukseen ja tutkimukseen. Tavoitteenamme on integroida kehittyneitä ja reaaliaikaisia menetelmiä ko. sovelluksien säätöön ja stabiiliustarkasteluun.

Tehtävänkuvaus

Haemme väitöskirjatutkijaa osaksi tutkimusryhmäämme työskentelemään verkkoyhdistetyissä järjestelmissä käytettävien tehoelektroniikkasovellusten kanssa. Erityisenä aiheena on tarkastella moniporttisia, modulaarisia tehoelektroniikkamuuntimia, joita voidaan käyttää liittämään useita (uusiutuvia) energialähteitä sähköverkkoon. Työ pitää sisällään aiheen teoreettista tarkastelua ja laboratoriossa tehtävistä käytännön mittauksista.
