We are now looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to carry out research in PalestineFutures research project. The fixed-term position is filled for 11 months, starting from the 1 October 2022

The Academy of Finland-funded project Present-futures in/of Palestine (PalestineFutures) studies formation of futures through ways in which ongoing developments overlap with various aspects of everyday life in the occupied Palestinian territories. Its main objective is to find ways of thinking Palestinian futures as they emerge on the ground, but also to think ways in which various anticipated, hoped and aspired futures operate as constitutive forces of the present.

Job Description

The postdoctoral research fellow will work with the part of the project that focuses on power relations and their entwining with how futures affect and become part of the everyday expectation horizons in occupied Palestinian territories. More specific research topics that the applicants need to explain further in their ‘Plan of intent’ can include, for instance, questions around infrastructural embodiments, mundane effects of planning, intimate politics of home/demolitions, or questions of affective futures. The position includes conducting postdoctoral level research, hence excellent knowledge on the relevant social science methods, participatory fieldwork practices, and methodological/conceptual debates in human/political geography (or other relevant field, such as anthropology, sociology, and political science) are key for a successful application. The duties also include participation in the activities of relevant research groups, Palestine Research Group (PRG) and Space and Political Research Group (SPARG), and limited amount of other project duties and teaching in English to be agreed upon separately (no more than 5% of annual work time).

Requirements

We are looking for candidates with a doctoral degree in human geography or other relevant fields in social sciences and humanities. Demonstrated research experience on Palestine in general, and on areas related to project themes in particular, are a key for a successful application. We welcome all relevant disciplinary backgrounds but consider knowledge on the fields closely associated with political geography an advantage. Postdoctoral researcher is expected to be able to conduct independent research, to publish in key international journals of relevant fields, but also to collaborate with other team members in conducting research, publications, and dissemination activities.

Candidate’s own research plans and interests, as explicated in a Plan of intent, may include methodological and/or theoretical themes that complement or bring in new perspectives to above mentioned research themes, and the project in general. We expect candidates to demonstrate a strong level of motivation and commitment to PalestineFutures and a good level of English language.

When evaluating candidates, we will consider the following criteria:

  • The alignment of your research profile and ideas with the goals of the project.
  • The feasibility of your Plan of intent and its potential from the point of view of the project themes relevant for the postdoctoral research fellow position.
  • Your track record of international scholarly activity in relation to your current academic career phase.

We Offer

The project is intended for any suitable candidate in their postdoctoral career phase. The postdoctoral research fellow will be hired for a fixed term of 11 months. The start date will be 1 October 2022. A trial period (half of the duration of employment) is applied in this position.

Post-doctoral Researcher is expected to devote most of their time to research, publishing and collaboration with other project members and international partners. The remaining work time will be devoted to other project/teaching activities to be agreed on separately. The salary for Postdoctoral Researchers will be based on the job demand level 5 of the salary system for teaching and research staff in use at the Tampere University and is typically around 3500€ per month.

The applicants will be located to two relevant research groups, Palestine Research Group (PRG), and Space and Political Agency Research Group (SPARG) located in the Faculty of Management and Business. We have strong collaborative networks and offer great opportunities for researchers to develop their careers in a highly international environment.

We offer a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus and several restaurants and cafés on campus with staff discounts. Please read more about working at Tampere University.

Please submit your application through our online recruitment system (see the link below). The closing date for applications is 18 August 2022 (at 23.59 EEST / 20.59 UTC). Please write your application and all accompanying documents in English.
