The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Turku, the Deparment of Psychology and Speech-Language Pathology invites applications for

a statistician´s fixed-term, hourly-based position from the 1st of September, 2022 to the 30th of June, 2023.

The Faculty of Social Sciences is a vibrant scientific community of two thousand academic individuals. Its nearly 200 teachers and researchers and ca. 1 800 students all take an active role in the activities and development of the faculty. The Department of Psychology and Speech-Language Pathology conducts internationally high-quality research and provides research-based undergraduate and graduate education in the subjects of psychology and speech-language pathology. The location of the department in the Faculty of Social Sciences in the vicinity of Turku University Central Hospital enables diverse interdisciplinary scientific activities. In addition to teaching and research, the department also acts as a significant influencer in the field of speech-language pathology and psychology. The aim of the department is to reach the international top in research and teaching of speech-language pathology and psychology

The hourly-based statistician will help students in their Master’s thesis data analyses. The study program of both disciplines includes basic studies of statistics; yet, many students experience insecurity with the analyses of their own data.

The most typical statistical methods in Master´s theses include analysis of variance and regression analysis (also linear mixed models). Factor and cluster analyses are also common. The main tasks will consist of guiding students in their statistical analyses and planning the analyses for the studies, with the aim to increase the students´ own understanding and skills. In addition, the responsibilities will include assisting tasks at the statistical courses. 

This is a great opportunity to gain experience in guiding students and communicating your own expertise to other disciplines.


Requirements for the position

  • experience in using statistical methods, statistical software, and analyzing data
  • knowledge in SPSS and R statistical programs  
  • good IT skills and fluency in Excel
  • excellent skills in Finnish or English


In addition, we wish you to have

  • studies in statistics or other relevant discipline
  • good collaborative, interactional and problem-solving skills
  • ability to explain the analyses and their fundaments in a form that is easy for students to understand
  • organizational skills, sense of responsibility, and accuracy
  • good organizational and prioritization skills and a developmental attitude towards work
  • ability to acquire new skills, to adapt to changing work situations in a fast-paced environment and to work proactively.
  • interest in the disciplines of psychology and speech-language pathology

 Previous experience in working at a university or in research projects can be considered an advantage.

Employment contract, salary and university as a work environment
The position is a fixed-term position and begins on the 1st of September, 2022, or as per agreement, and ends on the 30th of June, 2023. There is a trial period of maximum half of the employment period in the position.

The salary depends on the appointee´s studies and will be 16,82 - 20,02 euros per hour. The maximum hours per month is 130 and during the employment period about 600. The monthly hours can vary considerably from month to month.
