Health Data Science is a strategic profiling area of Tampere University that brings together domain experts on data science and health research across Faculties. Health Data Science involves advanced analytics of biological, clinical, and health care data. Our area of interest centers around population-scale health care analysis with national registers and real-world data e.g. from hospital data lakes. We aim to develop and validate predictive models to guide health care decisions on prevention, screening and treatment, as well as develop approaches to patient stratification and treatment selection to optimize outcomes and health care effectiveness.

The position will be located at Faculty of Social Sciences (SOC) that focuses on society, health and welfare within the Unit of Health Sciences, involving biostatistics, epidemiology, health services research and other fields.

We conduct research also in collaboration with Tampere University Hospital (TAYS). Thus, the environment is strongly built to conduct translational research. Strong existing research areas in health research include applications in cancer, aging, diabetes, infectious diseases, mental health, prevention and health promotion, health services and policy, as well as nursing science.

Job description

We are seeking highly motivated applicants with a track-record of internationally competitive research in data science and its applications in health research.

We are interested in hiring an Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of health care data analysis. We seek candidates with experience in development and applications of novel analysis methods for studies of health care outcomes using registers and data lakes. We take a broad view of health care data analysis, including but not limited to development of computational solutions for (patient) stratification and treatment selection to optimize outcomes and health care effectiveness.

You will be expected to pursue and supervise scientific research in health data science applied to patient or population-level data at high level. Active collaboration with local, national and global research partners, as well as with clinical stakeholders and industry is encouraged. You will be expected to secure substantial external funding for your research program, as well as nurture interactions with the wider society. You can also contribute to development of degree education in health data science in line with your own expertise.

Requirements

You should have a doctoral degree in mathematics, statistics, computational sciences, or equivalent data science field, and postdoctoral training in methods applicable to health data science at population level. An ideal candidate would have a publication record demonstrating both the ability to advance data science methodology, and to pursue novel applications on health care data. A successful candidate should have a solid track record indicating research excellence, as well as skills in teamwork and collaboration. Teaching experience will be favorably considered but is not a requirement.

Associate Professor qualification requirements:

  • applicable doctoral degree

  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding
  • track record of international scholarly or artistic activity

Assistant Professor qualification requirements:

  • applicable doctoral degree
  • ability to undertake independent scholarly or artistic activity and potential to pursue scholarly or artistic activity at a high international level of excellence
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position

Tampere University strives for equality, diversity and inclusion at all levels, and encourages applications without regard to age, gender, ethnicity, nationality, disability or any other criterion not strictly relevant to the position.

Tehtävänkuvaus

Tampereen yliopistossa on avoinna tenure track –tehtävä, alana terveyden datatiede. Terveyden datatiede on yksi Tampereen yliopiston strategisista profilaatioaloista, joka kokoaa datatieteiden ja terveyden tutkimuksen osaajia läpi tiedekuntien.  Terveyden datatieteellä tarkoitetaan kehittyneitä laskentamenetelmiä biologisten, kliinisten ja terveydenhuollon aineistojen analysointiin. Mielenkiintomme kohdistuu erityisesti väestötason terveydenhuollon aineistoihin kuten kansallisiin rekisteriaineistoihin, tai "real world" datoihin kuten sairaaloiden tietoaltaiden potilasaineistot.
