Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en

The research group on autonomous mobile manipulators at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ENS), Tampere University, Finland, currently has nearly 20 researchers. In the group, we are doing interdisciplinary Field Robotics research by bridging theory and practice and closely cooperating with the industry.

Autonomous mobile manipulators research group is led by Prof. Mattila and has a proven track record in project-based multidisciplinary R&D research projects dealing with robotizing full-scale heavy-duty mobile working machines relevant to Finland-based high-tech companies, ranging from academic projects to technology transfer projects. Our real-world robotics research focuses on autonomous field robots, their nonlinear model-based and ML-based motion/force controls, and systems engineering. We perform our research on full-scale experimental field robotics systems at our outdoor lab and using the research infrastructure we share with our OEM industrial collaborators.

Job Description

Our group is seeking for 1-2 talented Doctoral Researchers (PhD students) with strong interest in autonomous mobile manipulators with vision-based control and machine learning.

The main task of the Doctoral Researcher will be to work on development of novel, electrified, heavy-duty mobile machines and corresponding methods for mobile manipulation. By participating in the project, the candidate will have an opportunity to directly participate in shaping the future of these machines. The goal is to push the limits of the to-be-developed electrified heavy-duty working machines for rough terrain in achieving the positioning precision, energy efficiency and ability to perform tasks based on the visual feedback. The methods will be evaluated in real-world environments using the available full-size setups mentioned above.

The exact direction of the research is determined by the project tasks, candidate’s experience, and interests. Participation in the project also offers international cooperation possibilities and scholar visits abroad.

Requirements

Outstanding candidates from the areas of Robotics, Control Engineering, and Computer Vision are welcome to apply. The candidate is expected to conduct independent research and at the same time contribute to the topics listed above. Successful candidates will be furthermore given the opportunity to work with undergraduate, and M.Sc. students.

You need to have a master’s degree in an applicable field and have demonstrated (during your studies towards the master’s degree or otherwise) the competence and motivation to pursue postgraduate studies.

Successful candidates must be pursuing or will be accepted to study towards a doctoral degree in the doctoral programme of the discipline. Please visit the admissions webpage for more information on eligibility requirements.

We appreciate the courses taken and prior knowledge in some of the following areas: Robotics and Controls, Machine Learning, Machine Vision, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics.

Programming experience in at least one of the following languages and environments is required: Matlab/Simulink, ROS/ROS2, C/C++, Python.

We offer

The position will be filled for an initial period of 2 years, with the possibility to extension. The starting date is preferably 1.1.2023 or as mutually agreed upon by both parties. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. The starting salary for a doctoral student is approximately 2500 EUR/month.

We offer you the opportunity to join our dynamic and innovative international community. As a member of staff at Tampere University, you will enjoy a range of competitive benefits, such as occupational health care services, flexible work schedule, versatile research infrastructure, modern teaching facilities and a safe and inviting campus area as well as a personal fund to spend on sports and cultural activities in your free time.
