Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational, and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health, and society. www.tuni.fi/en

The Theoretical Optics and Photonics (TOP) Group at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ENS), Tampere University, Finland, is a young and relatively small group, composed by 4 researchers, including the group leader, working mainly on theoretical aspects of optics and photonics, and the modelling of the flow of light in photonic nanostructures.

The TOP group is led by Asst. Prof. Marco Ornigotti and has a proven track record in fundamental and multidisciplinary projects dealing with optics, photonics, and their connection with other fields of physics, such as quantum mechanics, condensed matter physics, and field theory. We perform our research by mainly employing analytical and numerical modelling methods to study and investigate the properties of light in different systems and contexts. Moreover, the high integration of the TOP group in the Photonic Laboratory at Tampere University also gives us the possibility to directly test our theories and models by comparing them with experimental results.

Job Description

The Theoretical Optics and Photonics (TOP) Group is seeking for 1 talented Doctoral Researchers with strong interest in linear and nonlinear fibre optics, and structured light, to start their activity in January 2023 within the framework of the V4F project.

The research project will involve the study and modelling of light propagation in suitably engineered optical fibres. The ultimate goal of this research topic would be to completely characterize light dynamics in optical fibres with complex transverse and longitudinal profile as versatile platform to generate high orbital angular momentum (OAM) light pulses. The work is purely theoretical but will be carried out in close collaboration with the Advanced Coherent Sources Group, who will perform experiments on OAM pulse generation in optical fibers.

Requirements

The successful candidate must hold an applicable higher university degree, and a research plan for completion of a doctorate that will be prepared according to university’s instructions after the suitable candidate is found.

The candidate must have the competence and motivation to pursue postgraduate studies and complete a doctoral degree. Successful candidates must be pursuing or will be accepted to study towards a doctoral degree in the doctoral programme of the discipline. Please visit the admissions webpage for more information on eligibility requirements.

We appreciate the courses taken and prior knowledge in some of the following areas: classical optics, waveguide theory, linear and nonlinear optics, and quantum mechanics. Programming experience in at least one of the following languages and environments is required: Mathematica, Matlab, C, C++, Python.

We offer

The position will be filled for an initial period of 2 years, with the possibility to extension.  The starting date is preferably January 2023 or as mutually agreed upon by both parties. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. The starting salary for a doctoral student is approximately 2200-2400 EUR/month.

We offer you the opportunity to join our dynamic and innovative international community. As a member of staff at Tampere University, you will enjoy a range of competitive benefits, such as occupational health care services, flexible work schedule, versatile research infrastructure, modern teaching facilities and a safe and inviting campus area as well as a personal fund to spend on sports and cultural activities in your free time.
