The Department of Biological and Environmental Science is currently seeking to recruit candidates to the position of

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER in AQUATIC SCIENCES

for a fixed-term from April 1, 2023 until September 30, 2025, or as agreed (in total 30 months).

We are looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with demonstrated experience in mathematical modelling (preferably of aquatic communities) to join the Academy of Finland research project "How will multiple stressors impact cold-water lake food webs and their salmonid fishes? (COLDWEBS).

The Postdoctoral Researcher will develop an allometric trophic network (ATN) model for the highly-resolved food web in subarctic Lake Takvatn in northern Norway. Using the developed ATN model, the Postdoctoral Researcher will simulate how community dynamics may respond to ongoing and potential future stressors in high-latitude lakes, such as species’ invasions, fishing and increasing water temperature. Besides ATN model parametrization, simulations and generalization, the Postdoctoral Researcher will write scientific papers based on the simulation results and also contribute to development of a handbook for mitigation measures in Fennoscandian subarctic and alpine lakes subject to various anthropogenic stressors. The Postdoctoral Researcher is also expected to visit collaborators in UiT The Arctic University of Norway and to present the study findings in at least one international scientific conference.

You are the person we are looking for if you have

  1. PhD degree (or be about to obtain a PhD degree) and experience in at least one of the following fields: Aquatic Sciences, Ecology, Arctic Biology, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics or Statistics;
  2. Practical experience or willingness to refine skills in mathematical modelling and/or theoretical ecology;
  3. Capability of conducting independent research but also collaboration in large international research projects;
  4. Solid skills in English language and scientific writing; and
  5. Experience in data processing and mathematical simulations (using e.g. Matlab or R program).

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of a Postdoctoral Researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. A good command of English is required and a proficiency to teach in English will be considered beneficial. The PhD degree required for the position must have been completed before starting the position.
