We invite applications for a tenure-track position in aerosol science. The job description covers multidisciplinary science in areas such as combustion aerosols, atmospheric aerosols, nanoparticle synthesis, and respective measurement techniques. 

The Aerosol Physics Laboratory at the Physics Unit of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences seeks to  answer multidisciplinary questions that keep eluding aerosol researchers, such as the relative roles of primary and secondary particle formation of emission aerosols and the oxidative and reductive generation of particulate matter at the molecular scale. This involves the implementation of the latest experimental techniques—including on-line mass spectrometry—to resolve open questions related to particle formation and chemistry.  


Job description  

We are  interested in a broad range of excellent candidates that can strengthen or complement our present activities in the fields of aerosol instrumentation, nanoparticle synthesis by gas phase processes, combustion aerosols and atmospheric aerosols. A succesful candidate could have a background either in experimental or modeling studies. Strong expertise in the following subfields or a combination there of  is a special asset:  

Experimental:  

  • State-of-the-art experimental aerosol analysis  
  • Aerosol synthesis and high temperature aerosols  
  • Emerging pollutant and air quality studies  

Modeling:  

  • Aerosol process modeling  
  • Global and regional aerosol modeling  
  • Global and regional scale emission inventories  

If successful, you will be placed at the level of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor, based on your experience and expertise. While in the early stages of your career the focus is on research, in time you will be expected to contribute increasingly to teaching, curriculum development and student supervision.  

You will be expected to pursue and supervise world class scientific research in your topic area. Active collaboration with local, national, and global research partners, as well as industry is encouraged. You will be expected to secure substantial external funding for your research as well as nurture interactions with relevant stakeholders for societal impact. 

  

Requirements 

You should have a doctoral degree in physics, chemistry, atmospheric science, environmental science, environmental engineering, materials science, or a related field. You should also have experience in scientific or technological research in academia. Further requirements for each tenure track level are as follows:
 
Assistant Professor 
we require: 

  • ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence 
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position 

 
Associate Professor 
we require: 

  • track record of independent scholarly activity on a high international level 
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position 
  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding 
  • track record of international scholarly activity. 

 
Professor  
we require: 

  • high-level scholarly expertise 
  • experience of leading scientific research 
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction 
  • track record of winning external research funding 
  • track record of international scholarly activity

Initial appointment as Assistant Professor / Associate Professor is for five years, subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured faculty member after the first five-year period. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.   

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for an Assistant Professor is approximately 4200-4400 EUR/month and for an Associate Professor approximately 4800-5000 EUR/month and for a Professor approximately 5800-6100 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be negotiated for candidates with exceptional experience and/or performance.

Professori

  • korkeaa kansainvälisen tason tieteellistä tai taiteellista pätevyyttä  
  • kokemusta tieteellisen tutkimuksen tai taiteellisen toiminnan johtamisesta  
  • kykyä antaa korkeatasoista tutkimukseen perustuvaa opetusta ja ohjausta  
  • näyttöjä täydentävän tutkimusrahoituksen hankkimisesta  
  • näyttöjä kansainvälisestä tieteellisestä tai taiteellisesta toiminnasta
