Project background

Convergence is a new research field that brings together academics from Social Sciences & Humanities and Technology & Engineering to train the next generation of Doctoral Expertise and address future challenges and opportunities of multidisciplinary Convergence of Humans and Machines. Convergence is funded by the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation.

Convergence is based on the premise that, on the one hand, people are increasingly integrated with technology and our culture and practices are increasingly dictated by information technology. On the other hand, machines are becoming more alive, creative, and dynamic. In other words, human and machine are converging. The project has emerged from the need to redefine and renegotiate the roles of human and machine in society and from the need of cross-disciplinary collaboration understand this rising area.

Job description

We are looking for a Doctoral Researcher in the area of thin-film electronics and sensors. To pursue the research towards “Second skin – a wireless artificial cutaneous sensor” field.

Successful candidates will pursue a doctoral degree at Tampere University. Full-time doctoral studies are expected to be completed in four years.

An applicant  may only apply for maximum 3 Convergence positions from this list. This position number is 12.

Short description:

Electronic skin (e‐skin) technology, which mimics the perceptive features of human skin, paves the way for the successful integration of sensors with the human body in health monitoring, human–machine interfaces (HMI), intelligent robots, prostheses, and even for amplifying human sensory abilities. Such a lightweight and ultra-thin artificial skin-like surface can mimic the sensory receptors of a human skin that responds to minute changes in pressure, temperature, or humidity as well as synaptically memorize and learn from external stimuli. Compared to traditional approaches that were mainly based on serial communications approach, proposed approaches are based on asynchronous communication. This neuromimetic arhictecture enables simultaneously both transmission of information and low readout latency, which are key requirements to make large-area e-skin vision possible.

In order to apply the technology to real applications, research on device fabrication, circuits architecture, and human-machine interface should be carried out simultaneously. For example, it is important to investigate and develop technologies that can recognize various kinds of surfaces (e.g., smooth/rough, hard/soft, textures, warm/cold), but at the same time consider aspects that how these are communicated for humans (e.g., information and feeling visualization). We envision next generation e-skin as a means for social and emotional communication, since tactile information is significant in communication of emotions like love, tenderness, stress, or anger.

The research will focus on development energy-efficient additive thin-film fabrication processes to enable high-performance active components and sensors needed in artificial mechanoreceptor arrays, circuit design, and how to map signals from e-skin recognizable by humans. The experimental part, i.e., the development and fabrication of e-skin will be done in TAU/LFE -laboratory (https://research.tuni.fi/lfe/), which is a part of national research infrastructure: Printed Intelligence Infrastructure (PII) that is granted with Roadmap status (2021-2024) by The Finnish Research Infrastructure Committee. The equipment for the fabrication (i.e., printed electronics and thin-film patterning) and antenna characterization are available at TAU. In addition, the research will be utilizing Tampere Microscopy Center infrastructure for sampling and imaging. Human experimental tests will be run in the psychophysiological computing laboratory led by Prof. Surakka (https://research.tuni.fi/esc/). The lab is electromagnetically shielded, sound attenuated, and it houses several up-to-date physiological amplifiers, special devices like electrical muscle stimulators, virtual reality devices, software for creating experimental setups and VR environments, among other things.

Tentative Research problems/questions:

  • What materials and fabrication processes enable high-performance wireless e-skin platform?
  • How to map signals from e-skin recognizable by humans?
  • Can e-skin be implemented on the fingertips to convey information of tactile manipulation of various surfaces?
  • Can e-skin be used to communicate human touch to another person over the distance?
  • Can e-skin amplify human abilities?

Requirements

The applicant needs to have a Master’s degree in electronics, physics, electronic materials or a related field and have demonstrated (during your studies towards the Master’s degree or otherwise) the competence and motivation to pursue postgraduate studies. Please be prepared to provide proof of your merits when requested.

Skills and requirements:

  • Background and experimental skills in novel materials processing, device physics, circuits, and characterization.
  • Interest in and understanding of the functioning of the sense of touch
  • Willingness to perform multifaceted experimental work
  • Excellent writing and communication skills

Successful candidates must be pursuing or will be accepted to study towards a doctoral degree in the Doctoral Programme of Humans and Technologies (DPHAT). Please visit the admissions webpage https://www.tuni.fi/en/study-with-us/programmes/doctoral-programmes for more information on eligibility requirements. Please, pay special attention to the language requirements.

Preferred applicant’s qualifications:

The research topics require a strong interest and relevant experience in some of the following:

  • Hands-on experience in fabrication of thin-film devices or sensors (e.g., printed electronics, ALD, PVD).
  • Background on tactile actuators.
  • Basic knowledge of and/or interest in antennas and electromagnetic fields and waves.
  • Experience in human experimental research.

Candidates are selected based on the level of promise that they show, and this will be evaluated on the basis of their study and research interest description, their previous success in studies, and merits in writing the doctoral thesis and / or scientific publishing, as well as their background match to the research topic.
