Mechanical engineering is a broad and strongly evolving discipline, which develops solutions for today’s societal challenges. The discipline has a leading role in the development of more sustainable and smart products and production. Mechanical engineering has a significant contribution to new technologies and methodologies in digital transformation of machines and systems.  

The Automation Technology and Mechanical Engineering Unit at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences  conducts research and offers education in Automation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Robotics. Our research and education in Mechanical Engineering concentrates on aircraft engineering, product development, machine design, production and manufacturing, mechatronics, and robotics. We have active collaboration with local and international industry and research organizations.   

 
Job description   
We are seeking highly motivated and accomplished candidates in the broad area of Machine Design  for conducting high-level scientific and technological research and education with high societal impact. Your research in the field of Machine Design may focus on, for example,    

  • improving design methods, numerical evaluation methods, and experiments for behaviour, performance, and interactions in dry and lubricated tribological contacts of machine elements and structures, or 

  • improving design methods, numerical evaluation methods, and experiments for dynamic behavior of machine elements and structures 

Whilst you may have background in a research or industrial applications, you are expected to develop your own scientific research profile. Similarly, you are expected to develop strong national and international networks, including both industry and research institutions, to promote the societal impact of your research. Your research should strengthen and be complementary to our present research in  The Automation Technology and Mechanical Engineering Unit and to address recent and emerging scientific and societal grand challenges such as sustainability in industrial applications.   

If successful, you will be placed at the level of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor, based on your experience and expertise. While in the early stages of your career the focus is on research, in time you will be expected to contribute increasingly to teaching, curriculum development, and graduate and post-graduate student supervision.    

 
Requirements   

You should have a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering, materials engineering or a related field. You should also have experience in scientific or technological research in academia or in industry. Further requirements for each tenure track level are as follows:
 
Assistant Professor  
We require:   

  • ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence     
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.   

 
Associate Professor 
 We require:   

  • track record of independent scholarly activity on a high international level   
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position  
  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding.   

 
Professor  

We require:   

  • high-level scholarly or artistic expertise   
  • experience of leading scientific research activities  
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction   
  • track record of winning external research funding    
  • track record of international scholarly activity

Initial appointment as Assistant Professor / Associate Professor is for five years, subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured faculty member after the first five-year period. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.  
 
Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for an Assistant Professor is approximately 4200-4400 EUR/month and for an Associate Professor approximately 4800-5000 EUR/month and for a Professor approximately 5800-6100 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be negotiated for candidates with exceptional experience and/or performance.

Tehtävänkuvaus   
Koneensuunnittelun tenure track -tehtävän tavoitteena on koneenosien ja konerakenteiden  suorituskyvyn parantaminen tutkimuksen ja opetuksen keinoin. Tehtävään liittyvä tutkimus voi painottua esimerkiksi niiden käyttäytymisen ja kestävyyden arviontiin, mittaamiseen ja mallintamiseen tribologisissa kontakteissa tai niiden dynaamisten ominaisuuksien suunnitteluun, mallintamiseen ja testaukseen. Tehtävän tavoite on vahvistaa  Automaatio- ja konetekniikan yksikön tutkimusta ja opetusta.

Tenure track –tutkija 
Edellytämme:   

  • soveltuvaa tohtorin tutkintoa   
  • kykyä itsenäiseen tieteelliseen työhön ja potentiaalia kansainvälisesti korkeatasoisen tieteellisen  työn tekemiseen   
  • tehtävässä vaadittavaa opetustaitoa   

 
Tenure track –professori 
Edellytämme:   

  • soveltuvaa tohtorin tutkintoa   
  • näyttöjä itsenäisestä tieteellisestä tutkimustyöstä    
  • tehtävässä vaadittavaa opetustaitoa    
  • kykyä johtaa tutkimusryhmää ja hankkia täydentävää rahoitusta   
  • näyttöjä kansainvälisestä tieteellisestä tai taiteellisesta toiminnasta   

 
Professori 
Edellytämme:   

  • soveltuvaa tohtorin tutkintoa  
  • korkeaa kansainvälisen tason tieteellistä tai taiteellista pätevyyttä  
  • kokemusta tieteellisen tutkimuksen tai taiteellisen toiminnan johtamisesta  
  • kykyä antaa korkeatasoista tutkimukseen perustuvaa opetusta ja ohjausta  
  • näyttöjä täydentävän tutkimusrahoituksen hankkimisesta  
  • näyttöjä kansainvälisestä tieteellisestä tai taiteellisesta toiminnasta
