Do you want to become an expert in monitoring and stability analysis of electrical transmission systems?

We are looking for a MSc thesis worker for a project investigating the ultra-low frequency dynamics of the Nordic power system. In the ultra-low frequency oscillation (ULFO) phenomenon of the Nordic power system, all synchronous generators in the system oscillate coherently with a period of around 40-90 s. ULFO might deteriorate the frequency quality of the system and cause unnecessary control actions for frequency regulating power plants. It may also cause wear and tear of the mechanical systems of frequency regulating units. In certain cases, ULFO might cause the system frequency to drift outside the normal operating range, and thus, could endanger the frequency stability of the system.

You will assess the ULFO phenomenon using power system monitoring methods and measurement data from several years. You will evaluate how the phenomenon has changed during the recent years and analyze the main factors affecting it, especially power system inertia. The work will be done in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation, Aalto University, in collaboration with Fingrid (Finnish Transmission System Operator).  In the project, you can develop your skills in monitoring and stability analysis of power systems and data analysis. The project can be started as soon as possible, but not later than in June 2023. The salary for a master's thesis worker is around 2300 €/month and the contract is made for 6 months.
