Job description

We are looking for a talented and motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow to carry out research related to an Academy of Finland and National Institutes of Health (NIH, USA) funded project comprising groups from Tampere University, University of Helsinki and the Institute for Systems Biology (Seattle, USA). Overall, the project aims at the development of a digital twin for analyzing genomics data of acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

The main task of the position is the implementation of a web-based interactive visualization platform (dashboard) supporting and enabling decision-making by clinicians and enhancing communication with patients. This will correspond to the front-end of the digital twin for the project. 

The position will be part of the Professor Frank Emmert-Streib’s research group at Tampere University. You can find more information about group’s research activity here. Further project partners are Professor Olli Yli-Harja from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology at Tampere University, Dr. Caroline Heckman from the Institute for Molecular Medicine at the University of Helsinki, Dr. Mika Kontro from the Institute for Molecular Medicine at the University of Helsinki, and Professor Ilya Shmulevich from the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, WA.

Requirements

The position is intended for recently graduated researchers, so that they may gain further experience and advance their careers. You should have a PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science or a related subject area. We expect competence to pursue independent scientific work and adequate teaching skills. You should be fluent in spoken and written English and have solid experience in the following:

  1. Programming Languages: JavaScript, HTML, CSS, R, python
  2. Server side: node js 
  3. Client side: react js
  4. API development skills to integrate and authorize users to obtain specific packages of resources from the specific API.
  5. Familiarity with the visualization of javascript libraries and their implementation for interactive visualization (d3, jquery, ...).
  6. Experience in DevOps practices (software development process: building, testing, deployment, version control, pipeline, monitoring and logging).
  7. Database skills: knowledge of database query languages (MongoDB ql, sql) for extracting data from various sources, transforming into a format to be used for applications (integration).
  8. Machine learning (data visualization, exploratory analysis).

The followings skills are considered as an advantage:

  1. Experience with web development with Shiny for R.
  2. Experience with the analysis of biomedical or genomics data.
  3. Ability to supervise M.Sc and Ph.D students.
  4. Theoretical traits for the analysis of experimental work.

We are looking for versatile and independent postdoctoral research fellow with a solid background in Computer Science­­­­. We expect that you have experience in the closely related area of the positions. The position may also involve some teaching duties in the future. Please be prepared to provide proof of your merits when requested.

We offer

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of one year. Planned starting date is in the beginning of May 2023, or as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the position requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a postdoctoral research fellow is placed on level 5-6 of the job requirements scale. In addition to the basic salary, a supplementary salary will be paid according to personal performance, depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.
