The BioMediTech Unit of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow specializing in Computer science with the application in medicine. The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of three years.

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) is dedicated to pursuing world-class research and delivering high-quality education in the fields of biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine, and health technology. We conduct basic, applied, as well as clinical research in collaboration with Tampere University Hospital (TAYS). Thus, the environment is strongly built also to conduct translational research. Strong existing research areas in health research include biomedical engineering fields from biomaterials and microtechnologies to health data science, cell, and molecular biology with applications for example in cancer, cardiovascular and celiac diseases, and immunology.

Since 2002, Professor Olli Yli-Harja has led the Computational Systems Biology (CSB) group in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology at Tampere University. The CSB group takes an interdisciplinary approach and has developed numerous computational methods based on a deep understanding of the role of mathematical models in theoretical biology, rooted in complex systems theory. In addition, Professor Yli-Harja holds an Affiliate Faculty position at the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) in Seattle, WA, which will be a close collaborator for the selected researcher. Job description

We are seeking a talented and motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research related to a project funded by the Acacemy of Finland and the National Institutes of Health (NIH, USA). The project aims to develop of a digital twin for analyzing multifaceted data of acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

The project is led by a team of Principal Investigators, including Professor Olli Yli-Harja from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology at Tampere University, Professor Frank Emmert-Streib from the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Science at Tampere University, Dr. Caroline Heckman from the Institute for Molecular Medicine at the University of Helsinki, Dr. Mika Kontro from the Institute for Molecular Medicine at the University of Helsinki, and Professor Ilya Shmulevich from the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, WA.

The main task of the position is the implementation of a web-based interactive visualization platform (dashboard) that supports and enables decision-making by clinicians, while also enhancing communication with patients. This will  serve as a front-end of the digital twin for the project. 

Requirements

The Postdoctoral Researcher position is aimed at providing recently graduated researchers with an opportunity to gain further experience and advance their careers. We are seeking candidates with a PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, or a related subject area, who possess the competence to pursue independent scientific work and have adequate teaching skills. Candidates should be fluent in spoken and written English and have solid experience in the following:

  • Programming Languages: JavaScript, HTML, CSS, R, python
  • Server side: Node.js 
  • Client side: React.js
  • API development skills to integrate and authorize users to obtain specific packages of resources from the specific API
  • Familiarity with the visualization of JavaScript libraries and their implementation for interactive visualization (d3, jquery, ...)
  • Experience in DevOps practices (software development process: building, testing, deployment, version control, pipeline, monitoring and logging)
  • Database skills: knowledge of database query languages (MongoDB ql, sql) for extracting data from various sources, transforming into a format to be used for applications (integration)
  • Knowledge of access control models.

Candidates with additional experience in analyzing biomedical data, machine learning, web development with Shiny, and other relevant areas will be given preference. We also appreciate experience on studying and working abroad and contacts with the international research community.

We are looking for versatile and independent researchers with a solid background in Computer Science and relevant experience in closely related areas. Candidates who possess theoretical traits for the analysis of experimental work and the ability to supervise M.Sc. and Ph.D. students will be considered an advantage. The position may also involve some teaching duties in the future. Please be prepared to provide proof of your merits when requested.

The position is a fixed-term contract for three years, starting on June 1st, 2023 or as agreed upon. A six-month trial period applies to all new employees.

Salaries are based on job demands and employees' personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities.  The position of a Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands levels 5-6 (teaching and research staff). A typical starting salary of Postdoctoral Researcher is around 3500 EUR/month.
