We shape a sustainable future by making research breakthroughs in and across our disciplines, sparking the game changers of tomorrow and creating novel solutions to major global challenges. Our community is made up of 13 000 students, 400 professors and close to 4 500 other faculty and staff working on our dynamic campus in Espoo, Greater Helsinki, Finland. Diversity is part of who we are, and we actively work to ensure our community’s diversity and inclusiveness. This is why we warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to join our community.

The School of Chemical Engineering is one of the six schools of Aalto University. It combines natural sciences and engineering in a unique way.

The Department of Chemistry and Materials Science is looking for:

Postdoctoral Researcher to work on Nanoscience for biomedical applications

You will be developing superhydrophobic surfaces that will be used for single cell labelling and other biomedical applications. Your work will contribute towards the fields of biotechnology and nanoscience with the aim of improving medical diagnostics and single cell analysis.

Your task will include developing and fabricating micro- and nanoscale superhydrophobic surfaces and devices. You will also work together with collaborators on developing the biomedical applications.

Your background and expertise

We are looking for a researcher who has passion to become a scientist working in an interdisciplinary topic combining micro-and nanoscience to biomedical and biomaterials science.

We expect the candidate to have a doctoral degree and a strong background in one of the following. The other aspect can be learned on the job.

  • Micro- and nanofabrication, for example optical or e-beam lithography, film deposition and etching. Typical characterization techniques, electron microscopy, goniometry.

  • Expertise in working with single cell labelling or trapping (with droplet microfluidics or microwell arrays for example) or applications of superhydrophobic surfaces in biomedical science.

What we offer

We offer an inspiring scientific environment. You would work in the facilities of Micronova in Otaniemi in a project headed by Dr. Ville Jokinen and you would become part of the Microfabrication group (led by professor Sami Franssila).

You will also have an opportunity to be involved in collaboration with a research group in University of Helsinki (Faculty of Medicine) in order to develop the biomedical applications.
