We are looking for a one-year fixed-term postdoctoral researcher to carry out research in HUMANE-CLIMATE research project, located in the Faculty of Education and Culture. The project is implemented in a high-level multi-disciplinary research environment bringing together scholars from the Spatial Socialization and Environmental Citizenship Research Collective (SPECS) and Space and Political Agency Research Group (SPARG).

The project “The civic potential of climate mobility” (HUMANE–CLIMATE) explores the potential of critical environmental pedagogy to raise children and young people’s awareness of climate mobilities, and to encourage equitable relations globally between people whose living environments are strongly impacted by the negative effects of climate change and those who are less exposed to such direct effects. Empirically, we focus on Finland and Greece as part of the European Union. The study takes a postcolonial approach to climate mobilities and sets out to develop just relations through mutually recognized global climate citizenship. It involves three Research Tasks: critical analysis of migration and climate policies in the EU (RT1), pedagogical climate mobilities interventions in schools (RT2), and participatory action research with young climate citizens (RT3).

Job description

The postdoctoral researcher will join in the work carried out in RT1, with focus on migration and climate policies in the EU, from a postcolonial climate mobilities perspective. The empirical study involves a critical policy analysis of the key policies (New Pact on Migration and Asylum, Green Deal), carried out by using qualitative data analysis software Atlas.ti. We expect the researcher to be acknowledgeable on climate mobilities research, and to have expertise in one or more of the following areas: forced migration; postcolonial environmental studies; critical policy analysis; European migration and asylum policy; European climate policy.

The appointment as a postdoctoral researcher will be made for a term of one year, during which she/he is expected to familiarize with pertinent scholarly literature (especially the nexus between European climate/migration policy), select relevant documents and expand the project’s document database, work on the policy analysis, and take part in the reporting of the results. We aim at producing two co-authored journal articles from RT1, to be presented in international conferences and published in high-profile scholarly journals. The duties will also include active participation in the activities of SPECS and SPARG, and a limited amount of teaching in English to be agreed upon separately.

Requirements

An eligible candidate will be expected to hold a doctoral degree from a relevant field and have a track record of international scholarly activity. Suitable doctoral degrees include human geography, global studies, migration studies, refugee studies, mobility studies, policy studies, or other fields relevant to the research themes of RT1 in the HUMANE-CLIMATE project.

The successful candidate’s own research interests, as expressed in the motivation letter, may include methodological and/or theoretical themes that complement or bring in new perspectives to the RT1. We expect candidates to demonstrate a strong level of motivation and commitment to HUMANE-CLIMATE. A good level of English is also required.

When evaluating candidates, we will consider the following criteria:

  • Your track record of international scholarly activity.
  • The alignment of your research profile and ideas with the goals of RT1 in the HUMANE-CLIMATE project.

We offer

The postdoctoral researcher will be hired for a fixed term of one year. The start date will be between 1 January – 31 March 2024. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.
