The Department of Civil Engineering aims to build the structures of tomorrow through research, education, and collaboration. In cooperation with domestic and international partners, we use our expertise to create multidisciplinary and solution-oriented approaches. One of the missions of our building design and construction research is to integrate the two fields by creating new, research-based knowledge to promote energy-efficient, safe, sustainable, healthy and comfortable buildings, thus also supporting the transformation of the architecture, engineering and construction industry.

The Structural Mechanics research group is now hiring for a full-time Doctoral Researcher (PhD Student) position.

We are looking for exceptional candidates who possess the drive and ability to innovate in the field of structural mechanics. The ideal candidate will be passionate about exploring new frontiers in this discipline and pushing beyond the current state-of-the-art. The primary research activities for this position will involve integrating material science, physics of solids and structures, rigorous mathematical analysis, and computational methods with modern scientific methodologies and manufacturing technologies to shape the future of this field.

Requirements

Applicants must have (or about to have by August 2023) a Master’s degree in Mechanics (e.g., Applied, Computational, Solid, Structural), Engineering (e.g., Mechanical, Structural), Materials Science, Mathematics, Physics, or in a similar field.

In addition, profound knowledge of mathematics, mechanics, and general physics is expected. Programming skills and experience in CAD/CAE software are considered as an advantage for the candidate. Experience in developing experimental setups and conducting physical tests would also be beneficial. A successful candidate should demonstrate capability and willingness to learn new methods, can work both independently and in a team, and has good written and oral communication skills in English.

The doctoral studies at Aalto University take approximately four years. The candidate will be offered a one-year contract with possibility of an extension. The annual total workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1612 hours. The starting (gross) salary for the position is 2577 EUR per month and will increase with responsibilities and performance over time. The employment contract includes occupational health care, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system.
