TENURE TRACK ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, SUSTAINABLE CIVIL ENGINEERING

The vacancy is open at the Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering, Aalto University: http://civileng.aalto.fi/en/. The department has 18 professors supported by lecturers, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral students and technical staff. In total, the number of personnel is about 120. The department and school have well-equipped research infrastructures and access to national scientific computing services. Furthermore, the department and school are located at the Aalto University campus in Otaniemi, Espoo, where several other research institutions and organizations have laboratories and offices.

Job description

The Department of Civil Engineering invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Sustainable Civil Engineering. The new position is part of "Materials and Sustainable Use of Natural Resources", one of the key research areas at Aalto University. We are seeking a talented candidate who can provide research and teaching contributions in a wide range of areas, such as circular economy solutions with low carbon emissions, green building materials, recycling and reuse of infra construction materials and building components, design for deconstruction, construction technologies using green materials, solutions for extending service life of materials and structures, and sustainable design and management. The candidate is expected to perform multidisciplinary research with researchers in Civil Engineering and other disciplines. The candidates should have a doctoral degree in relevant engineering or material science disciplines. 

Professors at Aalto University are expected to perform high-quality research and teaching and supervise students on the doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate levels.

Professors are also expected to be proactive members of the university and international scientific communities, and to exhibit leadership and service to society.

Requirements

Applicants must have a position-relevant doctoral degree as well as international research activities and teaching experience that can be qualified as relevant for the position.

Well-demonstrated collaboration skills and an excellent command of English are essential as well. The merits and potential of the applicants will be appraised via a holistic evaluation based on the quality and quantity of research, teaching and academic leadership, in addition to the overall activity in the scientific community and society. A bibliometric analysis will be conducted for supporting the evaluation of research merits. The supplied most important research publications will be assessed with respect to their potential impact, as well as clarity of argumentation and as indicators of future research potential.

Scientific awards and recognitions as well as experience in acquiring and applying for funding, preferably academic competitive funding, are considered important advantages. Interdisciplinary research activities, roles in research organizations, pedagogical studies, student supervision and cooperation with industry are considered advantageous as well.

Salary will be defined according to Aalto University’s payroll system taking into account the applicant's experience and qualifications, but a salary request can be provided.
