The Department of Architecture at Aalto University is an internationally renowned education and research unit. With respect to Finland’s esteemed architectural heritage, we search for new solutions to the challenges of sustainable development. To us, architecture is an art form that requires practical skills and individual artistic development, as well as sustainability knowledge relevant to design and planning. We educate critical thinkers who accept their responsibility to research and design a socially, culturally, and ecologically sustainable built environment. The Department of Architecture offers degree programmes in architecture, landscape architecture and interior architecture. Currently, the BA level courses are taught primarily in Finnish whilst MA and doctoral level studies primarily in English. The Department of Architecture is now seeking a tenure track professor in:
 

Professor in Augmented Computational Design 

The call is open for all levels of the Aalto University tenure track system (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor). The position is full-time and will begin January 2024, or as agreed.
 

Job description

The professorship in Augmented Computational Design explores the complex information space of architectural territories for the analysis of relationships and the projection into possible future developments across all scales. In research and teaching, the professorship aims at enhancing the creativity in design through establishing novel data driven and immersive methodologies, and is addressing the systemic challenges posed by climate change and urbanization. The professor is expected to develop the field of computational design at the department in close collaboration with the professor in Design of Structures, the newly established interdisciplinary media platform MAGICS – Aalto Studios, and with a clear vision for positioning of the professorship within the international realm. 
 

The professor in Augmented Computational Design is responsible for establishing a future-oriented line of teaching open to all degree programs within the Department of Architecture, reaching from the Bachelor level and Master level up to doctoral education. External fundraising, multidisciplinary collaboration as well as the development and management work within the Department of Architecture are part of the work. We expect professors to be proactive members of the Aalto University and the international academic community as well as active driver in collaborations with national and international partners.

Requirements

A holistic understanding of past and present developments within the field of augmented computational design, of methods of design integration, and of its relevance for practice is expected. The applicants will be reviewed based on the quality of their research and track record, vision statements in research and teaching, teaching merits, academic leadership skills and societal impact. A Master degree in architecture or design related field and a doctoral degree is mandatory. The candidate is expected to be internationally networked and fluent in English. The position will require moving to Finland for candidates not already located in the country.

The salary will be defined based on the applicant’s qualifications and level of position and will follow the Aalto University salary system. In addition to the salary, Aalto University provides its employees with occupational health care and excellent learning and development opportunities.

After the application period closes, the Departmental Committee will draw a shortlist of candidates who will be invited to a site visit in late October. During the site visit they will be interviewed and asked to deliver a teaching demonstration.
