Speech and Voice Research Laboratory in the Faculty of Social Sciences in Tampere University is a well-equipped research unit that carries out experimental multi-disciplinary research on speech and speaking and singing voice since 1968. We are now seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work in the project described below.

This study investigates loud singing in Operatic style and in the Contemporary Commercial Music style called ‘Belting’. Comparison is made with loud speaking and shouting voice. The study focuses on efficiency (how loud the voice is) and economy (how much loading it

poses on the vocal folds). The topic is important since vocal overloading is an important risk factor for serious voice disorders. Singing and speaking samples from professional singers and vocally untrained participants will be recorded in the Speech and Voice Research

Laboratory in Tampere University. For comparison, results from physical modelling of voice production will be obtained in collaboration with the Institute of Thermomechanics, the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The results will profit voice science, singing

pedagogy and speech training. Updated knowledge of traumatizing voice loading mechanisms and adequate prevention of them among different voice users will have also clinical applicability.

Job Description

Tasks of Postdoctoral researcher include cooperation with project partners, especially documenting data of physical modeling of human voice production and reporting on it (writing scientific articles and giving international congress presentations in English) and guiding younger researchers.

Requirements

Required features:

The researcher hired for the position must hold a doctoral degree and have a good familiarity with the human voice and acoustic analysis methods, as well as good oral and written English skills. The person must be strongly motivated, persistent, proactive and capable of both independent research work and multidisciplinary teamwork.

Desired features:

Knowledge of the singing voice, physical modeling of the human voice, publications of the topic and studies in the field of engineering (bioengineering, electrical engineering) are considered an advantage.

We offer

The position will be filled for 2 years starting from 1.10.2023 or as mutually agreed. Additionally, there might be a possibility for a longer employment relationship. During the first year it is possible to work part time if mutually agreed. A trial period of 6 months applies to all our employees.
