PROJECT
“GAMEHEARTS - Games, Heritage, Arts, & Sport: the economic, social, and cultural value of the European videogame ecosystem” is funded by the Horizon Europe Programme and is led by Professor of Gamification Juho Hamari.
Social life has been radically transformed, most notably by a rise in new digital technologies and a shift towards more fluid, ludic and playful social practices. We live in a society marked by playful digital cultures and neoliberal political rationalities, where playful digital lives and fluid identities become not only desirable, but essential to survival. Recent research identified that entertainment media, including gameful approaches, can lead to experiences beyond mere fun and enjoyment, towards more profound experiences, such as encouraging people to reflection on oneself and/or wider society (such as, people contemplating and trying to understand themselves and their own place in society), and encourage empathy (such as, games that allow people to experience aspects of others’ lives and situations). However, the potentials for these gameful approaches in creating deeper experiences and connections remains relatively under-researched.
In this context, GAMEHEARTS explore and investigate the impact games can have in shaping audience engagement and responses, and in doing so, help to provide detailed insights into how gameful approaches may operate as a driver for increased inclusivity, wellbeing, and social cohesion. By integrating aspects from EDI (Equity, Diversity & Inclusion) education and game design, GAMEHEARTS consolidates existing capacities for how gameful approaches can create empathic and inclusive experiences and iteratively designs and evaluates the effects of games for EDI cognitive, behavioural, and attitudinal change, as a way to mitigate implicit biases and empower individuals to reflect and exercise their rights while respecting and upholding others’ rights in the arts and cultural practices.
In addition to producing scientific output, a key aim of GAMEHEARTS is to inform and engage with the public and wider societal stakeholders throughout the course of the project.
