The Environmental Health research group at Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow specializing in Environmental Health. The position is full-time and will be filled for a fixed-term period of one year.

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) is committed to high quality research and education in the fields of biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine, and health technology. We conduct basic, applied, clinical, and translational research in collaboration with Tampere University Hospital (TAYS). Our existing research areas in health research include biomedical engineering fields from biomaterials and microtechnologies to health data science, cell and molecular biology, with applications in areas such as cancer, cardiovascular and celiac diseases, immunology, and ophthalmology.

Our Environmental Health research group is engaged in Wastewater-Based Surveillance (WBS) and has experience in the surveillance of pathogens in municipal wastewater. Now we aim to expand the research infrastructure to cover the analyses on other biomarkers and chemical markers in municipal wastewater and sewage sludge. 

Job description

We are seeking a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher with a solid background in environmental (health) sciences to set up and update the MET laboratory equipment base, make the necessary acquisitions, develop methods and supervise the analysis. The tasks also include analysing organic pollutants, drug residues and proteins (biomarkers) in wastewater and sludge. 

Requirements

We are looking for versatile and independent researchers with an applicable doctoral degree in the field of natural sciences, environmental biotechnology / engineering, or a related subject area.  We expect you to have experience in the closely related areas of the position as well as the ability to independently guide other team members and make independent decisions. We value a competence to pursue independent scientific work and to write scientific publications. We expect you to be fluent in spoken and written English and have a solid experience in mass spectrophotometry, GC-MS, HPLC-MS, LC-MS/MS and/or MS, and other related instruments.

We appreciate experience of studying and working abroad and contacts to international research community. Additional experience in, for example molecular methods (qPCR and NGS), bioinformatics, epidemiology etc. is considered as a bonus.

Candidates with proven ability to supervise M.Sc. and Ph.D. students will be considered an advantage. Please be prepared to provide proof of your merits when requested.

We offer

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of one year, starting as soon as possible or as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The position of a Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands levels 5-6 (teaching and research staff). A typical starting salary of Postdoctoral Researcher is around 3500 EUR/month.
