Doctoral Researcher In Cloud And Network Computing
Description of the research
The Cloud and Network Computing group, headed by assistant professor Gopika Premsankar, is dedicated to advancing research in networked systems capable of seamlessly managing connectivity and data processing across a diverse array of devices ranging from Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and drones to mixed reality headsets. Our primary focus is on lowering the environmental footprint while enhancing sustainability, performance, and reliability. Situated at the convergence of wireless communications, cloud and edge computing, and network infrastructure, our research leverages optimization techniques, applied machine learning, and statistical analysis to achieve these objectives.
We are actively seeking a motivated doctoral researcher to join our dynamic team and contribute to our work.
What you will be working on:
As a doctoral researcher, you will help develop solutions to improve the sustainability of networked systems while working on your doctoral dissertation. Our current focus areas are:
- Identifying important carbon metrics for reducing the environmental impact of cloud and network computing, developing algorithms for carbon-aware service placement
- Analyzing the environmental impact of large-scale networked systems through simulation frameworks, incorporating data sources and feedback from multiple systems, including, energy systems
This work will require understanding cloud computing, networking technologies and energy systems (electricity markets, energy metrics, carbon metrics). Your work will often be interdisciplinary and require close communication and cooperation with other research groups.
The position requires:
- Master's degree in communication engineering, computer science, or a related field (with a CGPA of at least 3/5)
- Strong interest and motivation in improving the sustainability of networked systems
- Good programming skills - you will be required to provide a sample of your code during the recruitment process
- Ability to work independently and within a larger team

Application documents
To apply, please share the following application materials with us through our recruitment site Workday ("Apply now!”):
- A CV
- A short letter of motivation, at most 1 page, which describes your interest and motivation in applying for a PhD in this field (please try to include details that are not part of your CV)
- Transcripts of your grades in Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees
- Sample code, preferably on a code repository
- Names and email addresses of those who could provide a reference letter (at least two are required). They will be contacted directly at a later stage in the application process.
Please note: Aalto University’s employees should apply for the position via our internal HR system Workday (Internal Jobs) by using their existing Workday user account (not via the external webpage for open positions).

Application process
We will go through applications, and we may invite suitable candidates to interview already during the application period. The application deadline is April 30, 2024.
After a preliminary interview, you may be asked to submit a 2-page research plan detailing the specific research questions you aim to address. Although this happens at a later stage, it may be worthwhile to think about your research directions already during the application process.
Why Finland and why this group
The principal investigator has a strong research network in both academia and industry, so you will have the opportunity to collaborate with other researchers and research groups. We hope you have a strong interest and an ambition to make meaningful contributions in cloud and networking computing. We also expect you to be goal oriented and working with focus towards your doctoral dissertation. We are a young and growing team; there is some flexibility in defining your specific research goals and you will work closely with your supervisor in developing your research.
