Computing Sciences | Tampere universities at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences (ITC) in the Tampere University invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in the field of IC design.  

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are looking to hire a Doctoral Researcher for a fixed-term position till 31.7.2029. The doctoral position broadly belongs to either one of these two tracks.

Track 1- Hardware design for next-generation baseband processing/channel coding algorithms. 

Track 2- In-Memory-Computing based Hardware design for Machine Learning/wireless-communication accelerators. 

The research focuses on developing energy-efficient and high-throughput Integrated Circuits (ICs) for next-generation wireless communication networks as well as low-power Machine Learning (ML)/Artificial Intelligence (AI) hardware accelerators.

As a Doctoral Researcher, you will begin by developing and testing innovative solutions for future wireless baseband processing systems, with a focus on short channel code decoding algorithms for neXt generation Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (X-URLLC) scenario. The results will be disseminated in scientific peer-reviewed journals, international conferences, doctoral network events and events with industry. 

REQUIREMENTS

  • You need to have a master’s degree (or equivalent eligibility for doctoral studies) from electrical/wireless communication/computer engineering, or a related discipline in science or engineering completed on 1 August 2025, at the latest.  
  • Experience in at least one of the following is necessary: 
    • Track 1- Wireless communication systems, Information theory/Channel coding, Digital IC design, FPGAs/ASIC design, Machine Learning/AI for wireless communication systems
    • Track 2- Analog/mixed-signal ICs, Circuits design and analysis, Front-end/Backend IC design, Memory circuits design, In-Compute-Memory custom circuit design 
  • You also need to have an inquiring mind, enjoy problem-solving and be able to think independently while also being able to work in a team.  
  • A good command of English, both in writing and in oral presentations, is required.

WE OFFER

The duration of the fixed term employment is till July 31, 2029. The start of the employment is planned to be as soon as possible after the selection is made but the start date can be negotiated. A trial period of six (6) months applies to all new employees. 

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Doctoral Researcher is placed on level 2–4 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researchers is approximately 2650 EUR/month and it will increase during the studies depending on the progress (up to about 3500 EUR/month).
