Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en

The research group of Power Electronics at the Electrical Engineering Unit at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University works at the intersection of power electronics, optimal control and modulation, mathematical programming, and computational methods. The research group of Electromechanics focuses on electromagnetic and electromechanical energy conversion. The two groups are taking part to a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network project “Advancing Energy Conversion Technologies: High-Frequency Magnetics in Modern Power Electronics” (MAGNIFY) starting in October 2025. The project is a consortium formed by 9 universities, research centres and companies around Europe and aims to train 15 research fellows to contribute to the development of energy- and cost-efficient power electronics for sustainable electrification. More information on the project can be found at https://doi.org/10.3030/101226760.

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are now looking for two Ph.D. students to join the project and to grow into experts in magnetic components in modern power electronic systems and their control. Two positions with the following topics and international secondments are offered:

Position 1: “Harnessing time-domain loss models in model-based control”

  • Objective: Integrating dynamic magnetic hysteresis models into frequency- and time-domain control techniques for grid-connected converters with LCL filters.
  • Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Petros Karamanakos (Power Electronics)
  • Secondments: KU Leuven, Belgium (3 months), Hitachi Energy, Poland (3 months)

Position 2: “Design of inductors using time-domain loss models”

  • Objective: Design and optimization of single-phase LCL filter inductors taking into account dynamic hysteresis models for different magnetic core materials.
  • Supervisor: Prof. Paavo Rasilo (Electromechanics)
  • Secondments: Université libre de Bruxelles, Belgium (3 months), Thales Alenia Space, Belgium (3 months)

REQUIREMENTS

Successful candidates hold an M.Sc. in electrical engineering and are familiar with power electronics and magnetic components. They possess the theoretical and practical skills and some experience relevant to the position they are applying for. For “Position 1”, experience in power electronics (grid-connected converters) and control theory (modern control theory, optimal control) is required. A strong interest in mathematics, optimization (e.g., mathematical optimization methods) and computational methods is also important. For “Position 2”, experience in analysis and design of magnetic circuits and knowledge on different soft magnetic materials are required. MATLAB skills are required in both positions.

The positions also require:

  • Very good English language skills
  • Ability to conduct systematic scientific research, an inquiring mind and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate clearly in a multidisciplinary and international environment but also work and think independently
  • Ability to carry out the abovementioned secondments abroad as well as to travel to consortium meetings and international conferences

According to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) mobility rule, the researcher must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Finland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not considered.

The formal requirements need to met by the end of the application period (e.g. degree completion). The successful candidates need to apply for and be granted a study right for a doctoral degree in the doctoral program of the discipline at Tampere University. Please visit the admissions webpage for more information on eligibility requirements.

WE OFFER

The positions will be filled for a fixed-term period of 3 years. The starting date will be mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be set in accordance with MSCA rates and the gross monthly salary in the employment contract is at least 3950 € or 4450 € with family allowance.

Tampere University offers many benefits to its employees, e.g. occupational health services, flexible working hours, high-quality sport services and affordable lunch opportunities on campus.

International HR services offer their help with e.g. official issues in settling in Finland and Tampere.

Tampere region is one of the fastest growing city areas in Finland. Tampere is the largest inland city in the Nordic countries and a traditional centre of the Finnish industry. Today, the city is best known for its high-tech expertise and extensive knowhow in various fields. Tampere is also the most popular city in Finland for higher education studies

HOW TO APPLY

Please submit your application through our online recruitment system (link below). The closing date for applications is September 1, 2025 at 23:59:00 (EEST / CET +3). Applications and all accompanying documentation must be in English.

The following documents should accompany your application:

  • a CV (with a list of publications, if applicable)
  • a free-form application letter including names of two referees (max. 1 page)
  • degree certificates and transcript of records (M.Sc. and B.Sc. studies)
  • other relevant documents that support your application (e.g. M.Sc. thesis, the most relevant publications regarding the call (max. 2), etc.)
