Nico is looking for

Backend Engineer – IOT Data Services & Analytics Business Applications

for a client's product development team through a try-and-hire model.

In the try-and-hire model, you are first employed by Nico, typically for a period of 12 months, and you work full-time as a consultant on the client's project. After the agreed-upon rental period, the client has the option to recruit you as a permanent employee.

You’ll join a team building a production-grade, real-time data infrastructure to power operational monitoring, analytics, and potentially ML applications in the chemical industry. This role sits at the intersection of streaming data, IoT, and scalable engineering, with flexibility to explore new tech and influence architecture decisions. 

Required qualifications in this role

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering. or a related field
• Proven experience in designing and building backend micro-service applications using modern backend web frameworks (e.g. Spring Boot, FastAPI) for delivering high performance and secure REST and WebSocket APIs, in particular for enabling data analytics services, monitoring dashboards and business workflows
• Experience in building domain-focused backend services that implement  business logic and workflows, such as alerts, events, scheduled jobs.
• Familiarity with event-driven architecture and integrating backend systems with data stream platforms (e.g. Apache Flink, Kafka) and databases
• Solid experience in working with both time-series databases (e.g. Timescale DB, Influx DB) for IoT data and the related relational databases (metadata, configuration data)
• Experience in developing secure, scalable APIs with proper authentication, RBAC, and data access controls.
• Ability in building observability into backend services including metrics, logging, and error alerting.
• Experience in containerized application development using Docker and Kubernetes or similar orchestration tools
• Good language skills in English (spoken and written); Finnish language skills are considered an advantage

Knowledge which we appreciate in the future but not mandatory

• Understanding of multi-tenant backend architectures, access control layers, and scalable service designs in environments with distributed devices and data producers
• Familiarity with backend business applications for stream & batch dataprocessing and analytics platforms, where backend APIs (e.g. built with SpringBoot) serve as control planes, metadata providers, or external triggers for stream processing jobs
• Exposure to ML/AI use cases for time-series or sensor data and applying ML/AI on time series data, such as data discovery, anomaly detection, forecasting, and predictive models
• Familiarity in implementing and managing CI/CD pipelines for automated testing, integration, and deployment in production environments
• Cybersecurity knowledge and best practices

Other technical skills which are an advantage but not mandatory

• Experience in working with industrial process data or working with IoT systems
• You will also be responsible for maintaining the legacy functional backend until it’s replaced with new technology

As a person, you are proactive, technically skilled and take initiative. You also have strong problem-solving skills to solve problems and work in a diverse team and see solutions rather than problems. 

You can be located anywhere in Finland. We expect you to be prepared to visit the client regularly in the Helsinki metropolitan area.
