The Strategy team is a key function in Wärtsilä’s Marine organization, charting a successful route to shape the decarbonisation of the maritime industry and capture growth in Services.

Collaboration is in the DNA of this function both within our team as well as collaborating with Business Units and Corporate Functions. This position provides a unique opportunity for personal growth in terms of knowledge and understanding of our company and the industry.

The Strategy team in Marine builds trustful relations with the Marine Management Team and Senior Management in different business units: fact-based and candid definition of the strategic direction, goals, actions and execution is only possible when trust with your stakeholders is well established.

We are now looking for a Manager, Strategy who will report to Vice President, Strategy in Marine.

Location of the position is preferably Helsinki, Vaasa, Turku (FI) or Trieste (IT). Other locations in the main Wärtsilä Hubs in Europe can be considered.

Your main responsibilities

You have a key role in the Marine Strategy process. This means that you will:

  • Develop Marine’s long-term strategy
  • Support Business Unit Management Teams in Marine in identifying, evaluating, and executing strategic objectives and strategic actions
  • Secure consistency between different Business Units strategic objectives and strategic actions in driving desired results for Marine
  • Secure alignment of Marine internal and external communications with our strategy in close collaboration with Internal Communications

You have an important role in securing that Marine’s strategic direction and priorities translate into outcomes:

  • Secure transparency and timely follow-up of execution of Marine strategy
  • Provide hands on support for BU MTs in identifying and removing roadblocks that hinder execution of strategic actions
  • Give hands on support to Business Unit personnel in scoping and defining projects / initiatives to deliver the strategic objectives and actions, specifically on early stages

You are exposed to various projects within the strategy journey of Marine and are required to:

  • Evaluate target companies for M&A / venture / partnership in collaboration with the relevant Business Unit(s) and corporate function
  • Perform financial evaluation of competitors, potential partners and/or customers
  • Prepare or support business cases for new business development activities
  • Develop specific segment-, country-, product- strategies, including market assessment, Marine’s positioning analysis, strategy and action plan

Main requirements for this role:

  • Be resourceful and connect facts from different sources: able to identify, retrieve, and analyze business performance data
  • Have an excellent P/L understanding
  • Have excellent presentation and communication skills
  • Have excellent reporting and analyzing skills
  • Have management consulting background
  • Education: MSc. in Engineering, Economics, Business or similar. MBA is preferred
  • Having an excellent understanding of the maritime industry is considered as an advantage: key stakeholders, drivers, dynamics and trends, including decarbonisation and future fuels
