The Experimental Quantum Optics group is an internationally known, divers research group in the field of quantum photonics.  Within the newly funded Business Finland project TeleQuant, we are investigating and implementing novel quantum communications schemes. The projects will build on our expertise in high-dimensional quantum information and structured light, as well as the strong research focus on quantum light sources of Tampere University. For the implementation of this exciting research project, we are now looking for a skilled PhD student, who will support our efforts and is motivated to perform the doctoral studies on the highest level.

Job description

The Experimental Quantum Optics group is looking for a doctoral student to study and implement a novel quantum communication link. The project is well-funded through the Business Finland project TeleQuant. Besides performing research on the highest level, the position will provide the opportunity to work in a vivid research group, which is embedded in a highly active research infrastructure.

Requirements

Candidates must hold an internationally recognized Master degree in Physics (or graduate from a Master program during the recruitment process), ideally worked in the field of quantum photonics, quantum information, or closely related fields. Good written and spoken English skills are essential. Knowledge in programming languages, e.g., Matlab, Python, or similar are appreciated. Interest in quantum foundations and applications are advantageous. The candidate should further like to work in an international, collaborative research group, enjoy working with colleagues (national & international) and help at later stages of the PhD studies in supervising Bachelor and Master students and teaching tasks.

The doctoral position is fully funded and will be filled as soon as possible with some flexibility in the starting date.  A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researchers is typically around 2850 EUR/month. Our incentive salary system for Doctoral Researchers ensures salary increases based on the progress of the doctoral degree and thesis.

Experimental Quantum Optics -ryhmä etsii väitöskirjatutkijaa tutkimaan ja toteuttamaan uuden kvanttikommunikaatiolinkin. Projekti on hyvin rahoitettu Business Finlandin TeleQuant-hankkeesta. Tehtävä tarjoaa korkeimman tason tutkimuksen lisäksi mahdollisuuden työskennellä eloisassa tutkimusryhmässä keskellä erittäin aktiivista tutkimusinfrastruktuuria.

Edellytykset

Hakijoilla tulee olla kansainvälisesti tunnustettu fysiikan maisterin tutkinto (tai valmistua maisteriohjelmasta rekrytointiprosessin aikana), ja mieluiten omata kokemusta kvanttifotoniikan, kvantti-informaation tai niihin läheisesti liittyvien alojen parissa. Edellytämme hyvää puhutun ja kirjoitetun englannin kielen taitoa. Ohjelmointikielten, kuten Matlabin, Pythonin tai vastaavien, osaamista arvostetaan. Kiinnostus kvanttimekaniikan perusteisiin ja sovelluksiin katsotaan eduksi. Hakijan tulee haluta työskennellä kansainvälisessä, yhteistyöhön perustuvassa tutkimusryhmässä, nauttia työskentelystä kollegoiden (kansallisten ja kansainvälisten) kanssa ja tohtoriopintojen myöhemmässä vaiheessa auttaa kandidaatti- ja maisteriopiskelijoiden ohjauksessa ja opetustehtävissä.
