Mobile working machines (MWM) are critical to industries like construction, mining, and agriculture and key to Europe’s sustainability and productivity goals. To meet rising demands for green, autonomous, and digital solutions, the ENGAGE network brings together top machine manufacturers (Volvo CE, Liebherr, Ponsse, AGCO), tech leaders (Bosch, Bosch Rexroth, Novatron, GIM Robotics), and six leading academic groups across Europe.

ENGAGE will train a new generation of engineers through Industrial Doctorates, equipping them with cutting-edge expertise in AI, robotics, and mechanical engineering. Together, we’re building the future of smart, sustainable mobile machinery.

We are now looking for Doctoral Researcher for a project of real-time multimodal perception for sensor fusion on a mobile working machine.

Job Description

Project tasks and objectives:

Industry objectives: To investigate sensor configurations and machine learning methods for sensor fusion-based machine perception for real-time operation, including the implementation on a real machine.

Science objectives: 1) To investigate different sensor configurations and proper ways of capturing calibrated and synchronized data streams. 2) To investigate perception methods for rich multimodal data including, cameras, Lidars, radars, IMUs, and GNSS systems. 3) To investigate and develop methods for real-time sensor fusion in autonomous working machine context. 4) To investigate methods for uncertainty quantification from multimodal data. 5) To investigate approaches to self-supervised learning using the co-occurrence of the multimodal signals (e.g., vision, lidar and radar), and common motion. Training will include: broadening knowledge of the state of the art in related fields, such as multimodal perception, real-time 3D sensing, ML based sensor fusion and state estimation.

The doctoral candidate will also be involved in dissemination through social media promotion of the network, such as project website, LinkedIn groups, YouTube video channels, and blogging.
