The Doctoral School of Industry Innovations (DSII) at Tampere University explores research questions that are directly relevant to industry and business. The Electrical Engineering unit at the the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences in Tampere University invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in the field of satellite-based positioning. The partner company for this position is u-Blox. The positions will be filled for a fixed-term period of 2 years, with the possibility of contract extension. 


Job description 

The Doctoral Researcher will participate in activities related to wireless satellite positioning in an industrially-funded research project and will enroll as a PhD student at Tampere University in the Electrical Engineering Unit of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences. The research work will focus on developing a scalable, robust positioning framework by integrating GNSS and emerging LEO-PNT signals with distributed AI and multimodal sensor data. The researcher will participate in all the PhD-related activities (attending lectures and writing publications) required for a PhD thesis and will also participate in writing deliverables (about once/year), in regular project meetings with the steering committee and in various project-related workshops. The researcher will work in both industrial and academic environments, with a time split at each venue to be further agreed with supervisors. Publications are very important during the project duration. The researcher will be provided with supervision in a team with deep expertise on indoor and outdoor wireless positioning and wireless communications, as well as signal processing and hardware aspects of wireless systems. Upon excellent results, the position will be renewed every year, until the end of 2029. 

 

Requirements 

To be eligible to apply for the Doctoral Researcher position, you must have completed a MSc degree in a relevant area of engineering before the starting date of employment mentioned below. The successful candidate needs to apply for and be granted a study right for a doctoral degree in the doctoral program of the discipline at Tampere University. The position requires:   

  • The applicant must have strong skills in Matlab or Python -based programming and must be willing to expand their Matlab skills 

  • Knowledge about GNSS, wireless navigation and machine learning is desirable  

  • Additional skills that are highly appreciated in this position are the willingness to work hard and to learn more about the fascinating research field of satellite positioning, ability to work both independently and in a team and interest in a research career

We offer 

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of two (2) years, with the possibility of contract extension. The starting time of the position is 1.1.2026 or as soon as possible after that. A trial period of six (6) months applies to all our new employees. Remote work opportunities are agreed separately when needed. 

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a doctoral researcher is placed on level 2-4 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for a Doctoral Researcher is approximately 2700 EUR per month. The salary increases based on experience and the progress of doctoral studies.
