Job Description

Did you know that on average a person uses 1,44 million kg of metals, minerals and fuels in their lifetime? Although part of this consumption can be recycled, much of that needs to come from earth’s crust. Metso plays a vital role in this as a manufacturer of mining, aggregate and recycling equipment in addition to pumps and valves used in process industry. Metso is looking for a Data Scientist to join our Digital Office functions in Tampere, Finland.

At the Digital Office, we are developing digital services for all Metso business lines: mining, aggregates and recycling equipment. As a Data Scientist, you will work together with the rest of the data and analytics team in developing solutions for predictive maintenance, performance improvement and process optimization use-cases.

As a member of the team, you will participate in the development of IoT (Internet of Things) solutions from the HW (Hardware) for data gathering all the way to business where the value of your work is captured. With the existing IoT platform and fresh data & analytics platform, you will have a great opportunity to put your skills to work right away and participate in further development work with the rest of the team of motivated and skilled professionals.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Collaboration between the Digital Office, Development Manager and other managers from Metso’s different business units, and proactively finding analytics solutions for the business needs
  • Development of predictive models and deploying them to the production environment (mean-time-to-failure, product recommendations, anomaly and failure detection, optimization, forecasting)
  • Improving the data and analytics methodologies and capabilities within Metso
  • Visualizing and communicating the findings to the stakeholders
  • Management and monitoring of the performance of the models and data accuracy

To Succeed

You have a Master’s/Bachelor’s or Ph.D. degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or other related field. Your work history includes relevant experience in creating and using advanced machine learning algorithms (regression, simulation, clustering, classification, decision trees, neural networks, etc.) and distributed data/computing tools.

You have technical skills in Python, (U-)SQL, HiveQL accompanied by knowledge of Agile working methodologies. We appreciate knowledge in R, Spark, Scala, Docker and working in Azure environment. In addition, a good understanding of manufacturing and process industry or mining, aggregates and recycling equipment is a plus.

Your collaboration and communication skills are convincing and you speak and write fluent English; Finnish skills are a plus. You have a business-savvy, can-do attitude and excellent coordination skills.
