VTT – beyond the obvious.

Biomass processing technologies, cell factories, food solutions

There is a significant societal and industry interest in new, more efficient, and environmentally friendly ways production. VTT is currently developing the readiness of emerging bioprocessing technologies and systems, also stated as cellular agriculture, which show great potential for future means of production.

In this thesis work, the potential use of by-products of food and forest industry as materials to produce new products by bioprocessing is assessed. The work includes information retrieval and analyses of statistical process data. The target of this work is to gain understanding of the availability of side-streams from the industry and their potential for different bioprocessing end-products via microbial conversion. The targets for production are either food, feed or other uses, depending on the best suitability of the material for bioconversion.

The optimal candidate would have knowledge in some of these areas: bioprocess technology, industrial biotechnology, understanding industrial processing, food production, and industrial management.
