Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en

The research group of Electromechanics in the unit of Electrical Engineering at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University focuses on numerical electromagnetics and magnetic materials. We work at the interface of electromagnetic theory, computational science, physics of magnetic materials and electrical engineering applications of practical importance. Our vision is to integrate advanced electromagnetic modeling tools together with practical design of electromagnetic energy conversion devices, such as electrical machines, transformers, inductors and energy harvesters.

We are now starting a 5-year European Research Council funded project related to development of electromagnetic modeling tools for magnetic components used in power electronics applications. In particular, we aim at developing multiscale power loss models for ferrite and tape-wound magnetic cores of inductors and transformers as well as multistrand windings used in wireless power transfer applications. New measurement setups and prototypes of such devices will also be built during the project.

More information on the project can be found at: https://www.tuni.fi/en/news/models-decreasing-energy-loss-being-developed-tampere

We are seeking for several highly motivated Ph.D students and postdoctoral researchers with backgrounds in computational modeling, electromagnetics, physics, material science or power electronics.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The work will be divided and adjusted for the 3-4 researchers based on their interests and backgrounds. Possible research topics include:

  • Development of homogenized finite element (FE) models for ferrite cores considering the realistic microstructure.
  • Coupling micromagnetic simulations to electromagnetic FE models for analysing amorphous and nanocrystalline tapes.
  • Development of efficient FE calculation tools for eddy-current losses in multistrand windings, considering random conductor positions.
  • Measurement of losses in magnetic components using fieldmetric and calorimetric methods.
  • Design of inductors and transformers and building of power electronics converters.

In the beginning of the project, the focus is on the development of fundamental modeling techniques. Towards the end, the focus will shift to applying the models for designing power electronics systems.

Participation in teaching at the Unit of Electrical Engineering is possible. The postdoctoral researchers will also take part in project management and instruction of Ph.D. students. The job requires occasional traveling to international conferences to disseminate the research results. International research visits to other universities or research institutes are also possible.

REQUIREMENTS

Successful candidates hold a M.Sc. or Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (electrical engineering, applied mathematics or physics) and are enthusiastic to learn about numerical modeling techniques, magnetic materials and electrical engineering applications. They possess good English language skills, are good at communicating and working in a team, while able to conduct systematic scientific research. Experience in at least one of the following is a definite advantage: FE simulations, micromagnetic simulations, development of numerical solvers, multiscale modeling, domain decomposition, homogenization, programming, magnetic component design, power loss measurement.

WE OFFER

The positions will be filled for a fixed-term period of maximum 2.5 – 4 years. The starting date will be mutually agreed, but preferably in March 2020. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researcher is about 2300 EUR per month and it will increase during the studies depending on the progress (up to 3100 EUR per month). The salary for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow starts typically from 3 500 EUR per month, and increases based on experience.

Tampere University offers many benefits to its employees, e.g. occupational health services, flexible working hours, high-quality sport services and affordable lunch opportunities on campus.

International HR services offer their help with e.g. official issues in settling in Finland and Tampere.

Tampere region is one of the fastest growing city areas in Finland. Tampere is the largest inland city in the Nordic countries and a traditional centre of the Finnish industry. Today, the city is best known for its high-tech expertise and extensive knowhow in various fields. Tampere is also the most popular city in Finland for higher education studies.
