The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry is located on the Viikki campus. The mission of the faculty is to promote the sustainable use of renewable natural resources through scientific research and research-based teaching. We focus on agricultural and forest sciences, food and nutrition, microbiology, as well as on economics and management. We cover the full natural resource chain from farm to fork, the entire field of forest sciences from soil chemistry to marketing, as well as the environmental effects of related activities. Graduates from the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry are versatile experts in biosciences and business, able to meet the needs of both the business sector and society at large.

Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry and Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences invite applications for the position of

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / FULL PROFESSOR IN FOREST GENOMICS AND BREEDING

The selected applicant will be appointed to a fixed-term assistant / associate professorship (tenure track) / full professorship depending on their qualifications and career stage. The tenure track position is expected to lead to full professorship after evaluation.

We seek an internationally competitive researcher with a strong academic record of accomplishments in forest genomics, tree breeding and conservation of genetic resources. The appointee will strengthen and expand research in the highly international research environment of the Department of Forest Sciences in the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, in collaboration with the Organismal and Evolutionary Biology research programme (OEB) at the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences. We are particularly interested in candidates with research interests in translational research to develop new and efficient breeding methods to increase the resilience and production of forest raw materials in a sustainable manner. The selected candidate is expected to develop research into the population genetic structure of boreal trees and the evolutionary dynamics that have resulted in that structure. Results will be utilized in designing deployment populations, such as seed orchards and mixtures of selected clones, for sustainable forestry. The candidate will also generate knowledge on the population genetic structure to maintain genetic diversity for species evolution and adaptation and for the development of genetic conservation strategies for forest trees.

This position is part of Thriving Nature, a new University initiative to understand biological resilience. Therefore, the appointee is expected to engage extensively in collaboration with other staff members to resolve, across biological levels, the mechanisms causing and regulating why some species show resilience to environmental change. Other positions being recruited in this initiative include ecological and evolutionary dynamics, ecological data sciences, genomics-based plant science, and translational plant sciences. The selected candidate will join existing research groups in the Department of Forest Sciences in the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-agriculture-and-forestry/research/...), and will have opportunities to work with research groups in the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences. The selected candidate is also expected to participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching and supervision in forest genetics, tree breeding and gene conservation at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, and to engage in collaboration with other staff members and research organizations.

Viikki campus offers excellent facilities for molecular and experimental work including extensive research greenhouses, common garden and plant phenotyping facilities as well as Viikki Plant Science Centre ViPS (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/viikki-plant-science-centre) and Viikki Research Farm (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/infrastructures/viikki-research-farm). In addition to the core facilities available at the Viikki Campus, the faculties also have research stations around the country and internationally (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/research-stations), including the Hyytiälä Forestry Field Station (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/research-stations/hyytiala-forestry-field-sta...). Thriving Nature will also establish a BioData Analytics Unit to be based at Helsinki Institute of Life Sciences, HiLIFE (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/helsinki-institute-of-life-science) with four new staff scientists and IT infrastructure to assist the PIs in dealing with current big data challenges and provide off-the-shelf solutions for data analysis. The BioData Analytics Unit will also assist with the development of analysis methods as required by the new synergistic research enabled by this profiling action, which will be integrated with our other data analysis efforts, such as HiDATA (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/helsinki-centre-for-data-science).
