We are now looking for a

Professor in Otorhinolaryngology

to join us in the Research unit of Clinical Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine.

Research Unit of Clinical Medicine is a multidisciplinary unit, one out of five units in the Faculty of Medicine. The unit covers the fields of clinical, epidemiological and translational research at 12 medical specialties (Genetics, Dermatology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Pediatrics, Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Psychiatry, Pediatric Surgery and Psychiatry). The Unit provides patient-centred evidence-based medicine to investigate, prevent, diagnose and treat human illness. Due to the very extensive research field the research activities of the unit cover a wide variety of topics. In combination with research our aim is to provide highest level evidence-based education for medicine both in undergraduate and postgraduate training.

In the field of otorhinolaryngology, evidence-based medicine is rapidly changing clinical practice. Novel ENT techniques focus on minimally invasive, AI-driven, and patient-centric care. Major advancements include robotic-assisted surgery for head and neck, advanced endoscopic sinus procedures, and innovative hearing restoration technologies. Rapid progress in the field now requires a new level of cooperation and pooling of resources in a concerted effort with different disciplines and study groups to achieve new approaches to get knowledge and care for various disorders in otorhinolaryngology. This requires collaboration in research, education, and innovation at all levels.

About the job

The position of a professor is the highest academic role at the university. Professors conduct, lead, and develop scientific research, provide research-based education, engage with society, and participate in international cooperation within their field.

  • The professor will be a dynamic individual who provides vision, leadership, and mentoring in the field of Otorhinolaryngology.
  • The professor is responsible for undergraduate and postgraduate training, and especially implementation of entrustable professional activities in postgraduate training as part of a clinician’s daily work.
  • The professor should give both undergraduate and postgraduate lectures and communicate with the leading specialists that the given teaching is in accordance with the highest evidence-based medicine in the field.
  • The professor should participate actively in undergraduate practical training by providing the students with clinical ward rounds and other practical hands-on training.

Who are you?

To succeed and fully enjoy the position, we expect from you:

  • Doctoral degree in medicine within relevant field
  • Specialist degree in Otorhinolaryngology
  • High quality scientific competence
  • Experience in supervising scientific research
  • Ability and motivation to give high quality education for undergraduate students in medicine
  • Ability and motivation to give high quality education based on research and supervision of doctoral theses
  • Evidence of international collaboration in the field of ENT surgery
  • Ability to act as an Academic Leader
  • Practical familiarity with the field of Otorhinolaryngology, as well as extensive work experience, with a minimum of 5 years, is required for the candidate to be appointed as a Chief physician at the Oulu University Hospital. University will be asking for a statement on this matter from the Oulu University Hospital.
  • The teaching language at the University of Oulu, Faculty of Medicine is Finnish and good knowledge of Finnish is required. Language of teaching and clinical work should be Finnish, and in postgraduate supervision, English can also be used.
  • Local work in contrast to remote work is strongly preferred, so that the professor should be mostly present at the Oulu University (minimum 3 days/week, weekly).

Factors considered advantageous for the applicant include active research on diseases within Otorhinolaryngology, national and international networking, and experience in administrative roles as well as in leading research projects. If several applicants are considered equally qualified, their ranking will be based on their clinical work and teaching experience.

The applicant’s activity in the scientific community, the practical relevance of their work within the field of Otorhinolaryngology, and their success in acquiring domestic and international research funding are also evaluated.

Salary

The position is permanent as of 1.9.2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The salary will be based on the levels 8-10 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The starting gross salary will be approx. 5900-7500 € per month (before taxes).  A trial period of 6 months is applied to the position.

The applicant must clearly indicate these ten publications in the publication list (e.g., with an asterisk or colour coding).

  5. Teaching portfolio (maximum five pages) containing:
    1. Teaching philosophy, teaching strategies, and methods 
    2. A description of oneself as a teacher and an implementer of educational work 
    3. Practical experience in teaching and efforts to improve teaching, digital teaching skills and giving feedback, possible participation in continuous learning provision, and international educational collaboration 
    4. Production and use of learning materials, including open educational resources 
    5. Maintaining and developing one’s own teaching and supervision competence; description of one’s pedagogical training; the significance of research in maintaining and developing one's teaching and supervision competence 
    6. Feedback received on teaching (student evaluations, peer evaluations, awards, and assessed test lectures) 
    7. Vision for the development of one’s teaching 
  6. Details regarding the acquisition of research funds 
  7. A brief research and action plan 

The selection process follows the University of Oulu recruitment guidelines and is carried out by a recruitment committee. The candidates are subjected to publication analyses based on their publication lists. The candidates who are considered most suitable by the recruitment committee will undergo an expert evaluation assessing the following merits:

  • Scientific excellence: Research outputs, such as publications, research data, methods, scientific quality, openness, scientific renewal, and impact
  • Research activities, such as acquisition of competitive research funds, presentations, workshops and seminars, trans- or multidisciplinary, awards, honours
  • International scientific activities and collaboration
  • Teaching, supervision of undergraduate students and doctoral researchers, mentoring activities, and pedagogical studies
  • Societal relevance, impact, and potential of scientific activities, such as patents and inventions, stakeholder activities, expert work, science popularisation, promotion of the SDGs, and citizen science
  • Services for the academic community, such as peer review, editorial work, academic expert, and administrative tasks
  • Leadership and interaction skills 

The person selected for the position of Professor must achieve a rating of “excellent” or “outstanding”, both in the overall grade and in the category “scientific excellence”. Top candidates will also be invited to an on-site or remote interview and asked to give a teaching demonstration as part of the assessment of teaching skills. In the evaluation of teaching skills, the person selected for the position of professor must achieve at least the grade “very good” (4/5).
