We are now looking for two

Doctoral Researchers

to join us in the unit of Computer Science and Engineering at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering.

The positions are located in the Biomimetics and Intelligent Systems Group (BISG) and are part of the SafeEarth Research Programme, which belongs to the national profiling actions supported by the Research Council of Finland.

BISG conducts internationally recognized multidisciplinary research in Data Analysis, Robotics, Secure Programming, and Bio-IT. The application areas of our research include optimization of industrial manufacturing processes, Industry 4.0, health and well-being systems, environmental monitoring with mobile robots, dependable Internet of Things (IoT), and seamless artificial-natural systems.

SafeEarth research programme aims to discover novel ways to recognise and tackle safety and security threats by studying 1) how solar storms with sudden energy releases and particle bursts create natural hazards on different timescales from seconds to centuries, 2) how the effects of humanmade attacks, especially in the cyberspace, can be minimised, and 3) how language, communication and information practices enable protective actions.

About the job

As a doctoral researcher, the candidate is expected to work on wireless network security research topics to investigate new threats arising from the acceleration of AI techniques in wireless systems.

The candidate will:

  • Investigate the opportunities for using AI as a tool for enhancing wireless security and for automation.
  • Ensure the security of AI lifecycles with the integration of wireless systems.
  • Investigate the new threat surface with AI in wireless systems and detect the stealthy attacks that can be caused due to the adversarial use of AI.  

To align with this work plan, it is important to have a thorough understanding of the security principles, wireless systems, mathematical knowledge, and the skills of using AI/ML tools.

Who are you?

We require from you:

  • Master's degree in wireless communication, computer science, electrical engineering, cybersecurity or a related field. A Master's degree must have been completed before the start of the doctoral researcher's work.
  • Abilities and motivation for doctoral studies. See also the requirements of the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS). 

In order to succeed and enjoy the position, we expect you to demonstrate:

  • Hands-on experience with machine Learning workflows and programming with particular theoretical knowledge on AI/ML security.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills, with familiarity in statistics and optimization theories.
  • Knowledge of wireless communication systems (e.g., 3GPP, 5G NR, Open RAN, AI-RAN etc.) is highly beneficial.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Motivation to work independently and collaborate with international partners-
  • Strong communication skills for the presentation of research ideas and outcomes.

We also appreciate

  • Finnish language skills
  • Experience in research projects at the national or European level 

Salary

The positions are fixed-term for 3 years, starting upon agreement.  

The salary will be based on the levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The starting gross salary is typically around 2700-2800 € per month (before taxes).  A trial period of 6 months is applied to the position.
